Prep track and field: Valders' Evans 3rd in 1,600

A weary Michael Evans admittedly ran out of gas as the anchor of Friday’s Division 2 3,200 relay. The team finished eighth, just off the podium.

On Saturday, the Valders senior was determined to not let that happen again in the 1,600 finals.

Evans developed a new strategy, had more than enough in the tank at the end and cruised to a third-place finish at the WIAA State Track and Field Championships at UW-La Crosse.

His time of 4 minutes, 23.49 seconds was nine seconds better than his sectional time.

Evans was with the pack in the first two laps. When leaders started to break away, he made sure to keep pace, using his size to “push the little guys away,” he said.

“That was the plan,” he said.

Evans finished strong, as well, nearly catching Joe Novak of Catholic Memorial, who finished in 4:23.11. Trevor Wunnicke of Dodgeville/Mineral Point won in 4:21.87.

After leaving State as a junior without a medal, Evans was determined to find that extra gear and not go home empty-handed.

“It’s a great way to end senior year,” Evans said.
