The Lakeview volleyball team raised a Class A district championship trophy on Saturday, as the Spartans defeated Grand Ledge in the final, 3-1.
The Spartans improved to 38-21 overall after winning by scores of 25-15, 23-25, 25-20 and 25-23. It marks the fifth district title for Lakeview in the last 12 years.
“I can’t say enough about this group of gals. They’ve really achieved a high level of play and understanding of the game, which is nice to say,” said Lakeview head coach Heather Sawyer. “Coaches can make a few comments or adjustments — but what it is, is what it is. They are pulling the load now.”
With the victory, the Spartans advance to Tuesday’s regional at Kalamazoo Central, where they will take on Mattawan beginning at 7 p.m.
Lakeview was led in the win by Casey Looper with 20 kills and nine digs. Julie Haring had nine kills and seven blocks; Madison Olsen had five kills and three blocks; Julia Miller had 35 assists; Jessica Martinovich had four aces; and Mei Kimoto had 10 digs and two aces.
Class C at Bronson: Sixth-ranked Bronson fell to top-ranked Mendon, 3-1 (25-14, 25-18, 21-25, 25-15). The Vikings were led by Mallorie Bassage with 12 kills. Kassidy Bystry had 30 digs; Skyler Sobeski had eight kills and 17 digs; Alexa Ratkowski had 33 assists and Allie Smith and Grace Pyles had seven digs apiece.
Class D at Burr Oak: Eighth-ranked Athens claimed its fifth district title in the last six years with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-21, 25-6) win over Marcellus Howardsville Christian. The Indians were led by Jenny Smittendorf with 25 assists, four aces and three blocks. Teasha Swank had nine kills, five digs and two blocks; Audrey Oswalt had 11 kills and six digs; Ashley Smittendorf had 10 digs and four aces; and Allison Fuller had six kills and 13 digs.; Siana Stanton had two kills, three digs and three blocks; Hailee Hurst had four kills, one dig and one block; Kelsie Weeks had four digs and Indya Stevens had one kill.
Athens (32-13-4) will face St. Joseph Michigan Lutheran at Loy Norrix on Tuesday in a regional semifinal.
