Senior Jonah Mrozinsky, the only Manitowoc Lincoln wrestler to qualify for the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament, split his two 182-pound matches in Madison to advance to Day 2 with a chance of finishing third.
Mrozinsky (40-9) started the day by defeating South Milwaukee junior Tom Mitchell (39-6) by 2-1 decision. Mrozinsky scored his two points in the second period and held off a Mitchell rally in the third period for the win.
With the victory, Mrozinsky advanced to face Tomah junior Jordan Reisenger (43-10) who pinned Mrozinsky in 27 seconds.
As a result of the loss, Mrozinsky will face Pulaski sophomore Levi Van Lanen (33-8) at 10 a.m. today.
Two Rivers freshman Paul Bianchi (48-2) dominated in his first-round match, topping Ellsworth sophomore John Albarado (19-15) with a 13-0 major decision. Bianchi will face undefeated St. Lawrence Seminary senior Joseph Nguyen (34-0).
Valders’ Stetson McCulley (138), along with Two Rivers juniors Ty Pelot (113) and Scott Skornicka (195), each had byes on Thursday. Pelot will face Viroqua junior JJ McClelland (45-2) while McCulley will face Monroe senior Kevin Klopfenstein (44-5).
Skornicka’s opponent for today was not available as of press deadline.
Kiel had a trio of qualifiers compete, as 145-pound senior Jay Wallace (37-7) won his first match over Sparta senior Michael Murnane (33-16) by 11-7 Decision. Wallace led nearly the entire way, leading by as much as 8-4 before holding off a late rally. He will face Southern Door senior Colin Schubert (44-5) today.
Against Viroqua senior Clay Fitzpatrick (45-4), Kiel’s Aaron Field (31-10) lost his first-round 170-pound match by 21-5 technical fall.
Matt Halverson’s first-round 285-pound match for Kiel ended too late to be included in today’s print edition of the Herald Times Reporter.
The Division 2 matches will all start at 11:15 a.m. today.
Mishicot’s two qualifiers split on Day 1. Senior Luke Finnel (47-4) defeated Arcadia sophomore Jacob Erbe (38-9) with a 7-3 decision. Finnel advances to face Lancaster junior Kyle Mezera (46-4).
Indians sophomore Weston Cracraft (36-12) fell in his first 120-pound match to Boscobel senior Ryan Mindham (38-8) by 8-3 decision.
At 152 pounds, Reedsville sophomore Grant Wedepohl (40-6) advanced with a 10-2 decision over Horicon senior Justin Shmauz (30-11). Wedepohl will now face Cashton senior Dominic Flock (41-1).
Also for Reedsville, Colby Kasten (43-2) at 138 pounds had a bye and will face Clear Lake senior Erik Ulrich (46-2) today.
