The Purdue women’s swimming and diving team added more local talent to a roster that already includes McCutcheon graduate Megan Gallagher and Twin Lakes graduate Kylie Vogel.
On Friday, McCutcheon senior Anne Butts signed to continue her swimming career with the Boilermakers.
Butts competes for the Mavericks in the individual medley and butterfly. Last season, she finished third in the Zionsville Sectional in the 200-yard IM in 2:11.97 and was runner-up in the 100 fly in 58.49 seconds, earning her a trip to the IHSAA state finals, where she finished 18th. Butts also was a part of McCutcheon’s 22nd-place 400 freestyle relay team at the state finals.
Russell the Pilot
Twin Lakes senior golfer Taylor Russell officially became a future member of the Bethal College women’s golf team when she signed with the Pilots on Tuesday morning.
Russell’s 86 helped Twin Lakes win a sectional title in September, and she carded an 89 in the Lafayette Jeff Regional.
Bethel is coming off a sixth-place showing at the NCCAA national championships last month in Panama City Beach, Fla.
School supplies for charity
At Lafayette Jeff’s boys basketball home opener against Pioneer tonight, the student government will be collecting school supplies at the door for students of Mintonye and Southwestern, whose buildings were damaged during recent storms. The Broncho basketball players also helped families clean up homes that were damaged by the storms.
Additionally, the Jeff student government will be collecting money during halftime of the varsity game and the athletic department will match whatever the students collect.
Two crews from the Western Indiana Officials Association, comprised of Lafayette area officials, have been selected to officiate state championship football games this weekend.
In the Class 2A game between Tipton and Ritter, the crew of Trent Johnson (referee), Dave Mecklenburg (umpire), Jim Marshall (head linesman), Mike DeBoy (line judge) and Tony Mark Gregg (back judge) will officiate. They last worked a state finals in 2007.
The team of Darren Haas (referee), Steve Hoffman (umpire), Jeff Gilstrap (head linesman), Mark Maxwell (line judge) and Matt Buche (back judge) will officiate the 6A state championship between Warren Central and Carmel. That crew last worked the state finals in 2009.
