Missed shots and turnovers, especially down the stretch, led host Cape Coral to a 49-42 loss to Gainesville in the semifinals of the Diamond Division of the Queen of Palms Tournament on Saturday night.
“I think both teams wanted it and both teams dug down,” Cape coach Kirk Myers said. “They just made more plays at the end than we did.”
With the loss, the Seahawks (15-2) will have to settle for playing in the third-place game against St. Thomas Aquinas of Fort Lauderdale on Monday at 5 p.m.
It was not a high-scoring affair on either end of the court, and neither team took a significant lead for the first three quarters. McKenna Beach scored 6 points in the second quarter, helping Cape take a 22-21 halftime lead.
As the Lady Canes threatened to expand upon small leads in the third quarter, Crystal Townsend took some timely jump shots to prevent scoring runs from taking place.
“She’s a player,” Myers said. “That’s what she does.”
At the end of the third, it was still either team’s game, with Cape Coral holding a 32-31 lead.
A 6-0 run gave Gainesville a seven-point lead late in the fourth quarter. Beach made a 3-pointer to end that run, but Cape started missing some shots at crucial moments. Gainesville, on the other hand, put up 18 points in the fourth quarter.
“It was more of a panic,” Myers said. “I wouldn’t say it was forcing shots. It was more of us looking at the clock and thinking we’ve got to get something going on, even though it was still a 7-point game.”
Beach led the Seahawks on the floor with 16 points, 4 assists and 5 steals. Townsend had a double-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists.
Gainesville will face St. Thomas Aquinas from Fort Lauderdale in the Diamond Division championship on Monday night at 8:30. In Sapphire, Sickles of Tampa will square off against Calloway County from Murray, Ky. at 7.
In the Sapphire Division, also at Cape, Estero dropped its consolation bracket game to Heritage (Palm Bay), 44-36. The Wildcats will face Port Charlotte in the seventh-place game on Monday at 9 a.m.
