STEVENS POINT Through 73 minutes of action it was either team’s game to win.
In the 74th minute, however, Stevens Point Area Senior High junior Jennifer Hoerter took it upon herself to give the Panthers a jolt.
Hoerter took a long pass from Abby Bohanski, beat a pair of Rapids defenders and then found the back of the net to lead SPSH to a 1-0 win over Wisconsin Rapids Tuesday night at Scaffidi Field during Wisconsin Valley Conference action.
“It was back and fourth all game, we were lucky to get that one in,” Hoerter said. “We were trying to shoot as much as we could and hoping one would go in. We had a ton of chances, but none went in.”
The Panthers remained undefeated in the league at 5-0 and played for the first time on grass this season. The Panthers’ first six games were all on turf.
Adjusting to the new surface might have been a factor in the even play.
“I think it was difficult because the ball moves slower and you have to put more pace on the ball,” Hoerter said.
Rapids, meanwhile, has been on natural grass all season and the Raiders were excited to finally play their biggest rival. And it was keeper Sophie Hardina — with nine big saves — who was a big key to keeping the Raiders in the game.
“The energy tonight was great and I was proud of my team,” Hardina said. “We were pumped and ready to play this game.”
