Raiders rally to topple Jaguars

Relying on balance, the host Toms River East girls volleyball team rallied for a 2-1 win over Jackson Memorial in Shore Conference Class A South on Thursday.

Liz Kolesar put up 10 kills, 16 digs and three blocks for the Raiders (4-7, 2-7). Jaclynn Sweeney notched 15 assists, 8 digs and three aces. Gabby Ball finished with 10 kills and 11 digs. Georgette Galeana had nine assists and added three digs.

Erika Szumel added 15 digs and three kills. Jenna Miller contributed 13 digs. East won the third game 25-21 and the opener 25-23. The Jaguars captured the second 25-23.

For Jackson (10-3, 5-3), Brianna Roath notched eight kills. Gianna Perez added 18 assists. Kayla Martin-Culet scapped for 21 digs. Karolina Sieczkowska finished with seven kills.

SOUTHERN 2, TR SOUTH 0: Carly DellaValle’s two kills, nine assists and seven blocks led the visiting Rams (14-6, 9-1) past the Indians (7-4, 4-4) in Class A South.

Cece Hodgson added six kills, six digs and three blocks. Andrea Eckholt led South with four kills and 14 digs.

WALL 2, TR NORTH 0: Taylor Mitchell’s 18 assists and six digs and Jess Stansfield’s eight kills, three blocks, seven digs and three aces powered the visiting Crimson Knights (11-1) past the Mariners (9-2) in nondivisional action.

Anna Litowinsky added five kills and three blocks. North’s Amanda Wrightson put five kills and four blocks into the scorebook. Danyelle Morales added 17 digs.

FREEHOLD 2, COLTS NECK 1: The host Colonials won the third game 25-21 to capture a Class A North victory over the Cougars (9-7, 3-4).

For Freehold, Laura Wroblesky had 11 kills, two blocks and two aces. Brooke Lundquist added seven kills and six digs. Sara Weiss notched two kills, 26 assists and two aces. Rebecca Cobb finished with eight kills and one dig.

Kailee Bongiovi led the Cougars with three aces, eight digs and four kills. Shannon Tice added four aces and eight kills. Caroline Harris contributed five aces and three kills.

Freehold won the first game 25-18. Colts Neck took the second 25-20.

ST. JOHN VIANNEY 2, HOLMDEL 0: Laura Matsen’s two kills and five digs led the host Lancers (10-2, 6-2) past the Hornets (1-13, 1-7) in Class B North.

Emma Heary added three kills and Amanda Caparelli contributed three digs. Tiffany Cheng keyed the Hornets with five digs, three assists and two aces.

IN BOYS SOCCER

LONG BRANCH 1, FREEHOLD 0: Gregory Borba scored the only goal of the game leading the Green Wave (4-6-2) over the Colonials (2-7-3) in a Class B North game. Borba scored in the 30th minute off an assist from Ygor Da Silva.

CBA 5, MIDD. SOUTH 0: Russell Romano had a goal and an assist leading the Colts (7-3-1) over the Eagles (2-10) in a Class A North game. Romano scored in the 30th minute and also had an assist off a goal from Gianluca Diubaldi in the 16th minute of the game.

IN GIRLS SOCCER

FREEHOLD TWP. 1, MANALAPAN 0: Late in the first half, Freehold Township’s Madison Dunn came back from the forward position to win a ball, played it to the outside for Nicole Sasso who took the ball to the end line and sent a pass to Nicole Whitley who scored from the six-yard line in the 36th minute to hand the Patriots (9-3) a victory over the Braves (7-2) in this Class A North clash.

HOWELL 3, MIDD. NORTH 1: Anna McComb, Bethany Feinstein, and Jessica Vigna provided the offense for Howell, while Annie Rozzo scored the lone Middletown North marker as the Rebels (6-2-1, 5-2-1) moved past the Lions (0-9-2, 0-8-2) in this Class A North bout.

RED BANK 3, NEPTUNE 1: Red Bank’s Alex Goldrich scored a pair of goals, while teammate Jazz Van Loon found the back of the net and assisted on another as the Bucs (3-9, 3-8) sailed past the Scarlet Fliers (1-9-2) in this Class B North meeting. Neptune freshman Christine Albano scored the Scarlet Fliers’ only goal of the game.

IN FIELD HOCKEY

RUMSON-FH 1, HOLMDEL 0: Rumson-Fair Haven’s Abigael Donohue snapped a scoreless tie in overtime with an unassisted game-winning goal at 63:28, helping the Bulldogs (10-0-1, 7-0-1) extend their udefeated season with this Class A Central victory over the Hornets.

Rumson’s Megan Kane recorded the shutout with three saves while her counterpart, Misha Nikoo, stopped 10 shots.

Sectional Semifinals

HOLMDEL 4, MANASQUAN 1: Holmdel’s Sarah Yan (1-6, 6-4, 10-3) and Lucy Wang (6-0, 6-1) each clinched points in singles compeition while the first-doubles team of Nandini Krishnaswamy and Stephanie Pugh (6-2, 6-3), as well as the second-doubles pairing of Angela Tu and Tiffany Chen (6-2, 6-3), both secured points in a sweep of doubles play in the top-seeded Hornets’ (18-1) victory over the No. 4 Warriors (11-3) in this semi-finals meeting.

Manasquan’s Abby Duddy earned the Warriors lone point with a 6-2, 6-3 first singles win.

Holmdel will play host to No. 3 Rumson-Fair Haven on Monday, October 14 in the Central Jersey Group II finals.

RUMSON-FAIR HAVEN 5, CINNAMINSON 0: Rumson-Fair Haven’s Camryn Short (6-0, 6-0), Sophie Pavluk (6-0, 6-0), and Katie Kane (6-1, 6-0) swept singles competition, while the first doubles team of Katie Foos and Phobe Short (6-2, 6-3), as well as the second doubles pairing of Caroline Heins and Jesse Rigby (6-1, 6-0), both secured points in doubles play en route to the third-seeded Bulldogs’ (10-3) Central Jersey Group II semi-finals upset over the No. 2 Pirates (9-4).

Regular Season

LONG BRANCH 4, KEANSBURG 1: Amina Hamzic clinched a point at first singles and Ruchi Asthana another at second singles as the Green Wave (1-12) surged past the the Titans (0-13) to collect the program’s first victory of the 2013 season in this nondivisional meeting.

Long Branch swept doubles competition as the top team of Ariana Cafolla and Jessica Lucas, as well as the second pairing of Joelle and Leah Rosen, each secured a point.
