Rebels break out bats in fifth inning


Entering the bottom of the fifth inning, Wendesday afternoon’s Class A North meeting between Freehold Township and Howell saw the Rebels (1-1) holding a manageable 2-0 lead over the Patriots (2-1). Then the floodgates opened.

By inning’s end the Rebels had a seven-run advantage en route to a 9-0 victory, thanks largely to senior pitcher Ryan Wares, who flourished on the mound and at the plate.

Wares tossed a complete game shutout, allowing only four hits while striking out 11 and walking none. He went 3-for-3, with two doubles, a home run and three runs scored.

The Rebels also received substantial offensive contributions from sophomore first baseman Mike Parisi who went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI. Howell’s Jordan Reizer also had a double.

MANALAPAN 4, MIDD. SOUTH 3: In the top of the fourth inning with the Braves (1-1, 1-1) trailing 3-0, Manalapan’s junior second baseman Matt Parke sparked his team’s offense with a two-run double. The Braves would plate two more runs in the frame and hold on to complete the comeback against the Eagles (1-1, 1-1) in this Class A North clash.

Middletown South’s Mike Grossi drove in all three of the Eagles’ runs with a two-run home run in the third inning and a run scoring double in the bottom half of the first.

CBA 15, MIDD. NORTH 3: Senior pitcher Joe Dudek (1-0) was the beneficiary of a six-run first inning and went on to strike out four, allowing three earned runs over five innings to lead the Colts (2-0, 2-0) over the Lions (0-2, 0-2) in a Class A North game. CBA’s senior shortstop Anthony Critelli went 3-for-4 with two RBI while sophomore outfielder Matt Morgan drove in three runs in his 2-for-5 showing.

WALL 13, FREEHOLD 1: Wall’s junior first baseman Jack Gifford dorve in two runs during his 2-for-4 performance at the plate as the Crimson Knights (1-0, 1-0) cruised past the Colonials (1-1, 1-1) in Class B North. Senior pitcher Luke Malone earned the victory and connected for a double, while Freehold’s sophomore third basmean Nick Belka went 2-for- 3.

OCEAN 6, LONG BRANCH 0: Ocean’s Ryan Lillie tossed a complete game with seven strikeouts and two walks, as the Spartans (2-0, 2-0) downed the Green Wave (0-2, 0-2) in Class B North. Carrying a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning, Junior third baseman Jimmy McGrorry delivered a two-run extending the Ocean advantage to 4-0 and putting the game out of reach.

RED BANK 11, NEPTUNE 1: Red Bank’s senior shortstop Ross Gisondi went 4-for-4, scored four runs and drove in three, while junior pitcher Jacob Nappi helped himself with three hits and three runs scored, as the Bucs (1-1, 1-1) routed the Scarlet Fliers (0-2, 0-2) in Class B North. Red Bank’s Chris Stevenson and Brian Wikoff delivered the only extra base hits of the game with a double apiece and Nappi (1-0) went on to earn the victory.

COLTS NECK 2, MARLBORO 1: Senior outfielder Lucien DellaFera scored the eventual game-winning run on an error with two outs in the top of the seventh as the Cougars (1-1, 1-1) and Mustangs (1-1, 1-1) combined to score three unearned runs in Class A North.

Senior hurler Mike Pepio went the distance, giving up the one earned run in addition to five hits while striking out seven and walking three.

RARITAN 10, MANASQUAN 7: Nick Pasquenza went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI, leading the Rockets (2-0) over the Warriors (0-1) in a Class A Central game. Bruce Strickland pitched 42/3 innings in relief and struck out five to earn the win.

Max Hawkins went 3-for-4 with one run scored for the Warriors.

RB CATHOLIC 11, RUMSON-FH 0: Red Bank Catholic’s junior outfielder Matt Kurdewan went 4-for-4 with three doubles and four RBI as the Caseys (2-0) beat the Bulldogs (0-2) in Class A Central. Junior pitcher Tom Puzza (1-0) picked up the win.
