THE WINNER: Lindsay Mayer

Athletic achievement: The state’s returning Gatorade Softball Player of the Year led the Lions to an 18-0 record and a berth in the Division I state tournament winner’s bracket semifinals against Toll Gate (Warwick, R.I.), scheduled for June 4. At the time of her selection, Mayer owned a 15-0 record and a 0.82 ERA with 150 strikeouts in 103 innings pitched. At the plate, the unanimous Division I Player of the Year was batting .508 with three home runs, 16 runs scored, 27 RBI and an .810 slugging percentage.
Academic excellence: Mayer has maintained a 3.79 GPA.
Exemplary character: An experienced pianist, she has volunteered locally as part of a fundraising campaign to benefit cancer research and as a youth softball coach and mentor.
“Lindsay Mayer is the best player in the state,” said Paul Kennedy, head coach of Veterans Memorial (Warwick, R.I.). “She’s such a great pitcher but she is also a very, very good shortstop and she’s an incredibly talented hitter.”
THE FUTURE: Mayer has signed with Virginia.
