Ricardo Arguello column: Prep Blitz back for another season

Well, the Prep Blitz has returned after what seemed like a very short summer break. Each week, we will dive into what’s relevant in the high school sports world, as well as take a look at what caught my eye the past week.

We’ll also look at the week ahead in what we have to offer in terms of livesteams and player profiles and we’ll cap each column with a few Tweets of the Week from area athletes.

Also, be sure to check out the Elite 11 and Sensational 6, our preseason football and girls’ volleyball teams. Our very own Jim Rosandick did a great job of putting these together and both teams can be found online at postcrescent.com/varsity.

Finally, if you have any suggestions or story ideas for this column, feel free to contact me at the email below.

I’m a big fan of new Neenah activities director Nate Werner. If his name sounds familiar, it should because Werner was the Appleton North boys’ soccer coach the past seven seasons and was also the head coach of the Appleton East girls’ soccer team from 2005 to 2010. I’m sure he’ll do a great job for one of the more successful sports programs in the state. … Speaking of Neenah, the Rockets’ boys’ soccer team got a big win this past Thursday over Kimberly. Both teams should be contenders for the FVA crown and Neenah exacted a little bit of revenge from last season, when the Papermakers handed them a 6-1 defeat. … Also, the Neenah’s girls’ volleyball team took third place at the prestigious Joust tournament at Homestead High School in Mequon. The Rockets are led by outside hitter Haley Barnes, setter Bailey LaMarche and middle blocker Carley Ramich. … I think everyone in the state underestimated just how good Xavier quarterback Matt Ferris would perform this season. Kid has 11 touchdown passes and more than 700 yards passing already. That’s Madden video game stuff there, son. … Kudos to the Waupaca football team for outlasting Freedom 27-18 in last Friday’s Eastern Valley Conference showdown. That’s a key win as the Comets prepare for another EVC title run. … Be sure to check out the latest Associated Press football rankings on Tuesday every week in print and online. I am one of the voters and will always have a breakdown of how I voted each week.
