There were no real surprise upsets in the Level 1 playoffs this past week, though top-seeded Waupaca had quite the scare against eight-seed Antigo.
Here are this week’s predictions for Level 2. Dates and times should be known by this afternoon.
Bay Port at Appleton North (9-1): The Lightning survived a tough game against Stevens Point last Friday. Bay Port is an even bigger test for North. I have faith in the North defense to pull out the slim victory. Predicted winner: Appleton North.
Ashwaubenon (10-0) at Menasha (8-2): The Jaguars have a great team but I really feel that the Bluejays played a tougher schedule and will win this showdown at Calder Stadium. Predicted winner: Menasha.
Menomonie (9-1) at Hortonville (10-0): This is the game the Polar Bears have been waiting for. Few teams are playing as well as Hortonville at the moment and I expect the Polar Bears to come away with the win and advance to Level 3. Predicted winner: Hortonville.
Cedarburg (8-3) at Kimberly (10-0): Kimberly last played Cedarburg in a loss in the playoffs in 2010 in what turned out to be ex-coach Steve Jorgensen’s final game. The Papermakers are the best team in our area and should get past the Bulldogs. Predicted winner: Kimberly.
Waupaca (10-0) at Seymour (8-2): This is a fantastic matchup and one that I think will be won by the Thunder, who welcome back receiver Sandy Cohen. Predicted winner: Seymour.
Xavier (9-1) at West De Pere (9-1): Xavier looked like a complete team in its win over Notre Dame last week and the Hawks should be able to make some plays on the artificial turf at West De Pere. Still, it’s hard for me to pick against the Phantoms at home. Predicted winner: West De Pere.
Wautoma (5-5) at Winneconne (5-5): I picked against Winneconne last week against River Valley. I’m not making that same mistake again. Predicted winner: Winneconne.
Roncalli (10-0) at Little Chute (7-3): The Mustangs pummeled Peshtigo last week. That defense will lead another BIG upset this week against the visiting Jets. Predicted winner: Little Chute.
Campbellsport (7-3) at Freedom (7-3): Irish running back Nathan Peters is back and that makes Freedom a formidable opponent. Predicted winner: Freedom.
Coleman (8-2) at Shiocton (10-0): The Chiefs have a great shot at reaching the Division 6 state title game and should get a win here. Predicted winner: Shiocton.
Appleton East girls’ volleyball team: The Patriots join us on the big show on Wednesday at Makers Sports Grill in Kimberly to talk about reaching the sectional final level in the WIAA Division 1 playoffs. Wednesday, 7 p.m., on http://www.postcrescent.com.
Dylan Szews, Menasha football: The Bluejays starting senior running back talks about the Level 2 playoffs as well as his thoughts on the entertainment world. In print and online at postcrescent.com.
