Do you like watching the Varsity Roundtable? You know you do. That’s why the state’s only live online high school sports show is so popular among area athletes.
And starting this Wednesday, the Roundtable will have a new site sponsor: Makers Sports Grill, 700 Schelfhout Lane, in Kimberly, near Kwik Trip and across County N from Kimberly High School.
Makers’ owners Harley Cohen, Mike Roberts and Chris Kafka agreed to co-host the Varsity Roundtable two weeks ago.
“We’re definitely excited to try and promote local athletics,” Cohen, 50, said. “It was one of those decisions where we wanted to do that and obviously promote the business.
“We just started opening for lunch and we’re trying to be family-friendly and sports-friendly. We’re legally a restaurant so all ages are welcome.”
The first guests this week will be Kimberly boys’ cross country runner Kevin Kilgas and Kimberly girls’ volleyball player Mikayla Truax.
The show is live streamed on the Internet at postcrescent.com/varsityroundtable but family, friends, teammates and coaches are welcome to attend the show every week.
As always, the show will feature guests from schools all over the Post-Crescent Media coverage area. And Cohen said that Makers welcomes those guests from area schools with open arms.
“With any type of local bar/restaurant, we try to promote all of the area sports,” he said. “Regardless of which school they’re from, it’s all about local sports.”
What I liked from last week
I really like what I see from the Kaukauna boys’ volleyball team. Two years ago, the Ghosts reached the WIAA title game and this season they look like they could really do some damage in the playoffs. Kaukauna might not have the the standout players like Alex Judkins from that year, but they do have a solid core of very good players, led by Carter Belling, a talented junior who can elevate. … Neenah continues to dominate its opponents in girls’ volleyball. The Rockets ran their win streak in the FVA to 27 and their consecutive set winning streak to 46. Those are two amazing numbers. … Don’t look now, but the Waupaca and Xavier football teams are heading toward a huge collision course on Oct. 11. Both are undefeated in the Eastern Valley and overall and the winner of that game could decide the top spot in the EVC. … I’m always thinking about whom I’ll be placing on the Post-Crescent Media all-area team for football and just who makes the team at running back is going to be tough. So many great ones in our area, led by J.P. Peerenboom of Kimberly, Nathan Peters of Freedom and Alex Lasinski of Hortonville.
