Union’s season came to an end Tuesday, dropping a hard-fought, 25-13, 23-25, 18-25, 25-23, 15-12 volleyball decision to Class A No. 1 Wes-Del in a regional championship match.
The Rockets dropped the first set, but recovered to take a 2-1 lead.
DeAnn Kauffman had 23 kills, three assists and 17 digs for the Rockets (20-13); Lisa Rodriguez had two kills, 49 assists, an ace and 20 digs; Courtney Kinnaman had 20 kills, three assists, two aces and 13 digs; MacKyndsea Burke had five aces and 11 digs; and Lexi Shore four aces and 10 digs.
“It was very intense all the way through,” first-year Union coach Crystal Key said by phone. “We had a very successful season. The girls played hard all through. They fought very hard in this match and I’m looking forward to a successful future with the Rockets.”
Wes-Del won a Class A state title in 2011 and earned its seventh regional championship.
Union repeated as a sectional champion as the Rockets halted Blue River 25-10, 25-15, 25-15 this past Saturday to win the Class A tournament at Tri High.
Union also knocked off Randolph Southern 25-7, 25-10, 25-14 in the semifinals.
Kinnaman led the Rockets with a match-high 23 kills in the sectional victory, Kauffman finished with 11. Rodriguez contributed 32 assists.
It was the third overall sectional title for the Rockets, who also won crowns in 2002 and 2012.
Wes-Del (29-6) advances to meet Fort Wayne Blackhawk (24-8) on Saturday in a Class A semistate semifinal at Caston. The winner of that match will face either Washington Township (27-8) or Lafayette Central Catholic (27-9) in the final.
