Roundup: Monsignor Donovan gains in state tennis tournament


The host Monsignor Donovan girls tennis team pushed its record to 14-1 with a 3-2 win over Notre Dame of Lawrenceville in the NJSIAA South Non-Public A quarterfinals Tuesday.

Senior Erica Spina provided the winning point for the Griffins, besting Christie Pawl 6-3, 7-5. Spina is 14-1.

Teammate Giana D’Agostaro won 6-1, 6-2 at second singles. Donovan’s Gianna Marano came out on top 6-4, 7-6, (7-4) at third singles.


WALL 5, OCEAN 0: The host Crimson Knights (13-2) ousted the Spartans (9-5) in the Central Group III quarterfinals.

First singles player Sophie Graver keyed the win with a 6-1, 6-0 conquest of Julia Comer. Winning at second and third singles, respectively, were Artemis Apliga and Shaina Donner.

MANASQUAN 4.5, ROBBINSVILLE 0.5: The host Warriors (10-2) advanced with a win over the Ravens (7-4) in the Central Group II quarterfinals.

Abby Duddy led Manasquan, winning 6-0, 6-0 at first singles. Briane Lauria prevailed 6-1, 6-1 at second singles. Nicole Lauria and Beaton Erin and Ally Kaden and Brie Kozlowski prevailed at first and second doubles, respectively.

SHORE 3, SOUTH AMBOY 2: Freshman Troy Maher’s straight-set win at third singles clinched the Blue Devils’ win over the Governors in Central Group I.

Shore swept the singles slots with freshmen Halah Davis (first singles) and Annie Ruoff (second singles) also winning. The three singles players combined to lose just four games.

Boys soccer

MANALAPAN 3, MARLBORO 2: Chris Colen scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime period off an assist from Ryan Hammer leading the Braves (9-1, 8-1) over the Mustangs (2-7, 2-7) in a Class A North game.

Hammer also tied the game with a goal in the 75th minute for the Braves off an assist from Phil D’Anna.

MIDD. NORTH 2, FREEHOLD TWP. 1: Ramzi Habiby scored the game-winning goals in the 75th minute leading the Lions over the Patriots in a Class A North matchup.

Georges Fiori also scored the the Lions in the 32nd minute.

Field hockey

WALL 3, OCEAN 1: Bernadette Crehan had two goals and Hannah Manson made three saves as the Crimson Knights (9-1, 6-1) defeated the Spartans (7-3-1, 5-2-1) in a Class B North game. Ocean’s Karly Gabrysiak scored at 5:05 and Kelly Conway assisted on the play. The Spartans used both Sara Kraeutler (four saves) and Bailey Herr (two saves) in the game.

TR NORTH 2, JACKSON MEM. 1: Teresa Carr got the Jaguars (9-2, 8-2) off to a 1-0 lead with her goal at 6:33 but the Mariners (5-6-1, 5-5) roared back with two unanswered goals for the victory. First, Giana Morrongiello scored at 32:00 and then Nikki Gardner scored the game-winning goal at 44:06. Jackson Memorial’s Morgan Novak made 10 saves and Toms River North’s Kaitlin Maguire made seven saves.

SOUTHERN 2, BRICK 0: Bri Angellella scored two goals, one via a penalty stroke, and Allison Spaschak assisted on Angellella’s second goal as the Rams (7-2-1, 7-2-1) defeated the Green Dragons (3-6-1, 3-6-1) in a Class A South game. Brick’s Lauren Gorski made 13 saves.

POINT BORO 2, JACKSON LIBERTY 1: Avery Schatzman scored the game-winning goal 6:01 into overtime as the Panthers (8-2, 5-1) defeated the Lions (3-5-1, 3-5-1) in a Class B South game. Point Boro’s Holly Caldes made six saves and Jackson Liberty’s Karlie Baran made six saves.

Girls soccer

RB CATHOLIC 3, RUMSON-FH 0: Midfielder Sabrina Graziano scored from 15 yards out with 10 seconds left in the first half to get the Caseys (9-2, 8-2) rolling toward their Class A Central victory over the Bulldogs (6-4-1, 3-4-1). Grace Correll added a goal and an assist and Liz Thoresen scored directly off a corner in the second half. Red Bank Catholic’s Jackie Robinson recorded three saves for her fourth shutout in a row. Rumson-Fair Haven’s Samantha Beaudreault made 18 saves.

JACKSON LIBERTY 3, MANCHESTER 2: Nicole Mickendrow scored the game-winning goal with three seconds left in double overtime as the Lions (4-7, 4-5) outlasted the Hawks (3-8, 2-7) in a Class B South game. Mickendrow finished with one goal and one assist and Lindsay Corallo finished with two goals. Manchester’s Jenna Parliament scored both goals and Olivia Sumeriski had both assists. Jackson Liberty’s Johanna Sisco had seven saves and Manchester’s Megan Euler made 10 saves.

OCEAN 3, RED BANK 2: Talia Pritzlaff scored the game-winning goal with 35 seconds left in overtime as the Spartans (5-5-1, 4-3-1) outlasted the Bucs (2-8, 2-6) in a Class B North game.

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP 2, MIDDLETOWN NORTH 1: Danielle Matassa got the Lions (0-8-2, 0-7-2) off to a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 32nd minute but the Patriots (8-3, 8-1) scored two unanswered goals to win the game. First, Madison Dunn scored in the 53rd minute on a through ball from Nicole Whitley, and then Whitley tallied in the 73rd minute on a ball sent into the box from Olivia Pinto from the right side to the left.

PINELANDS 3, LAKEWOOD 0: Amanda Allikmaa had two goals and Ellie Sorrentino had one goal as the Wildcats (6-4, 5-3) defeated the Piners (0-9, 0-6) in a Class B South game.

Girls volleyball

WALL 2, MARLBORO 0: Taylor Mitchell’s four kills, three aces, four digs and 12 assists led the host Crimson Knights (9-1, 6-1) past the Mustangs (8-1, 7-1) in Class A North.

Veronica Portelli added two kills and five digs. Jessica Stansfield contributed three kills and seven digs.

Grace Kenningham paced the Mustangs with eight kills, four digs and two aces. Teresa Dinh added 13 assists and three digs. Haley Unger contributed nine kills and three digs.

SOUTHERN 2, JACKSON MEM. 1: Emily Miglin’s 12 kills and two blocks and Alex Andriani’s 15 assists powered the host Rams (13-6, 8-1) past the Jaguars (10-2, 5-2) in Class A South.

Cece Hodgson added eight kills and three blocks. Emily Miglin added 12 kills and two blocks. Jackson Memorial’s Kayla Martin-Culet notched 19 digs and Gianna Perez added 31 assists.

FREEHOLD 2, BRICK MEM. 0: The host Colonials (6-5), who topped Rumson-Fair Haven last Friday, received 20 assists and two digs from Sara Weiss in a non-divisional win over the Mustangs (2-9).

Julia Spencer added two kills, seven digs and two aces. Lisa Acosta led Brick Memorial with four aces and nine digs.
