Roundup: Siegel, Newsome shuts down Mt. Juliet 1-0


Siegel shut out host Mt. Juliet to edge the Lady Bears 1-0 Monday night in non-district prep softball action.

Siegel’s Leah Newsome scattered five hits over seven innings and struck out four to earn the complete game shutout. Siegel (16-8) scored when Bailey Leyhew doubled in teammate KaraLynne Levi. Levi had doubled and advanced to third on Newsome’s sacrifice bunt. Siegel finished with four hits.

Siegel returns to action at 6 p.m. April 9 at home against District 7-AAA foe La Vergne.

MTCS 2, Community 0

Peyton Buckner improved to 4-0 with a 77-pitch, complete-game shutout of District 9-A foe Community.

Buckner, a sophomore left-handed pitcher, hasn’t allowed an earned run in 23 innings pitched this season. Buckner has 30 strikeouts and has walked four and allowed seven hits this season.

Justin Winn went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Cougars (7-2 overall, 5-0 in District 9-A). Philip Bonabi, Caleb Gibson, Kyle Howard and Lawson Pitts all had hits for MTCS, which hosts Community at 6 p.m. today at Joe Baron Field.

DeKalb Co. 3, Central Magnet 0

Jacob Crume picked up the Tigers’ lone hit of the game. Austin Worley (2-1) took the loss. He struck out six and gave up four hits in seven innings for Central (7-8 overall, 2-1 in District 8-AA).

Forrest 4, Eagleville 1

Eagleville stranded 10 runners in the District 9-A loss at Vanderbilt’s Hawkins Field. Josh McCrary had two hits and an RBI for the Eagles. Britt Roberts struck out three and walked five in the loss.
