Nick Veith scored on a hit-and-run in the bottom of the seventh inning Saturday to give South Central a 5-4 victory over Borden and the Class A Lanesville Sectional baseball championship.
Veith reached base after being hit by a pitch. Jason Boston then singled to left, with Veith taking off on the pitch. He scored standing up.
With the victory, the Rebels (22-5) advance to the Loogootee Regional semifinals against Northeast Dubois on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET.
Borden (8-13) scored all of its runs in the top of the sixth, erasing a 4-0 deficit.
Back-to-back doubles by Garrett Vick and Jared Sanders (two RBIs) and a single from Cody Craddock accounted for the Braves’ runs.
South Central freshman Cory Ray went 2 for 3 and drove in two runs, both on a fourth-inning single.
Floyd Central advanced to the state finals, defeating host Jasper 3-2 in a semistate match.
Olivia Boesing, Floyd Central’s No. 1 in singles, won her 100th career match 6-2, 6-0 over Abby Rogers 6-2, 6-0. The Highlanders got their other two wins in doubles.
Floyd Central’s No. 1 doubles team of Whitney Batliner and Dana Frank beat Ashely Rogers and Elizabeth Theil 6-2, 6-2. The No. 2 team of Katherine Dauby and Erin Patterson beat Jasper’s McKenzie Hilsmeyer and Brooke Lueken 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
“It was a fabulous match,” said Floyd Central coach Rick Miller. “I am extremely proud of all the girls. Everybody fought hard, and our No. 1 singles and our No. 1 doubles are both undefeated.”
The Highlanders (20-4) will play Greenwood (17-5) on Friday at 3 p.m. in a state quarterfinal at Fishers High School in Indianapolis. The semifinals are Saturday at 10 a.m. at Indianapolis North Central, with the championship match at 2 p.m.
