Roundup: South River takes down Timothy Christian in OT


With the South River boys basketball team trailing by two with 15 seconds left, junior point guard Matthew Martinez hit two clutch free throws to send the game to overtime where the host Rams defeated Timothy Christian 72-62 in a Greater Middlesex Conference Gold Division game on Wednesday in South River.

Martinez finished with a game-high 27 points to go with six assists and five steals as South River (8-6) went on a 15-5 run in the overtime period.

Timmy Darrar added 15 points for the Rams while Bobby Applegate (11 points, 12 rebounds) and Tyler Harris (11 points, 10 rebounds) each posted double-doubles.

Jared Locke scored a team-high 18 points for the Timothy Christian (9-3), while Jeff Parker (15 points), Brandon Summers (14 points) and Zach Coyle (10 points) all scored in double figures as well.

Carteret 75, Spotswood 72: Juquan Robertson and Tyrell Lockley each scored nine points in the fourth quarter as Carteret (9-3) hit 11 of 12 free throws in the quarter to come from behind after trailing 53-48 entering the quarter.

Robertson finished with 21 points and Lockley ended up with 20, while Elijah Torres (13 points) and Brandon Gilder (11 points) both also reached double figures for the Ramblers.

Jake Dadika scored 19 points to lead Spotswood (10-3) while Corey Brown added 18 points and 10 rebounds as the two teams are now both tied atop the GMC Blue Division with 7-1 records.

J.F. Kennedy 47, Middlesex 42 (OT): Zach Buchholz hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 11 seconds left in regulation for J.F. Kennedy (4-6) and finished with a team-high 14 points as the Mustangs overcame a seven-point deficit entering the fourth quarter. Kyle Alvarez added 12 points for Kennedy while Middlesex (5-5) was led by Jarrett Bogus (18 points) and Marcus Evans-Little (10 points).

Perth Amboy Tech 46, Wardlaw-Hartridge 42 (OT): Kelvin Perez scored 15 points and Jordan Little added 10 as Perth Amboy Tech (5-5) came back from a nine point deficit heading into the fourth quarter by holding the Rams to just one fourth quarter point. Justen Davis led Wardlaw-Hartridge (3-10) with 22 points, 18 rebounds, and eight blocks.

Piscataway Tech 47, Bishop Ahr 24: Turell McClendon led all scorers with 17 points while Aziz Anstin added eight for Piscataway Tech (9-2), who carried a 13-point lead after the first quarter. Greg Patuto finished with 11 points for Bishop Ahr (7-4).

South Plainfield 55, Highland Park 49: Claude Payne led the way with 21 points, seven rebounds and five steals as South Plainfield (2-10) held off a late rally after Highland Park (2-7) staged a 21-13 run in the fourth quarter to pull within six.

Dunellen 50, South Amboy 47: Deon Brown scored 9 of his team-high 18 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Destroyers (7-4). Joe Fruncillo led all scorers with 20 points for South Amboy (6-6).
