The Rumson-Fair Haven Regional and Red Bank Regional baseball teams are ineligible to participate in this year’s NJSIAA Tournament because both teams had more than three players ejected in their game against each other this past Saturday morning, NJSIAA assistant director Larry White confirmed Monday morning.
The game was terminated in the bottom of the sixth inning, said Vinny Smith, one of the game’s two umpires, Saturday afternoon. Rumson-Fair Haven had 22 players ejected and Red Bank had 14 players ejected, Smith said. Smith filed a game termination report with the NJSIAA. The game was played at Red Bank Regional in Little Silver.
NJSIAA rules state: “Any varsity team accumulating three or more player or coach disqualifications for flagrant or unsportsmanlike conduct prior to the start of the NJSIAA Tournament will not be permitted to participate in the same.”
All ejected players must serve an NJSIAA-mandated two-game suspension. Red Bank played junior varsity and freshman players who were not at the varsity game against Rumson-Fair Haven in a Monmouth County Tournament game against Manalapan this past Saturday afternoon and will use JV and freshman players in its game at Wall on Tuesday, Red Bank coach/athletic director Del Dal Pra said.
Rumson-Fair Haven will do likewise on Tuesday and Wednesday in its games against Holmdel and Raritan today and Wednesday, said Rumson-Fair Haven Regional Superintendent of Schools Peter Righi.
Whether the two schools will be eligible to participate in the Shore Conference Tournament is to be determined after Shore Conference president Keith Lister has discussions with other members of the Shore Conference’s Executive Committee, Lister said Monday night. Lister is also the athletic director at Manchester Township High School.
The Shore Conference Tournament will be seeded May 13 and begin May 15.
Teams have to be .500 through games of the afternoon of May 13. The conference’s Controversies and Disputes Committees can bring an issue to the attention of the Executive Committee or the Executive Committee can look into an issue, Lister said.
The teams’ records may take care of the issue for the Shore Conference. Rumson-Fair Haven is currently 5-7. Red Bank Regional is currently 4-8.
Smith said the fight started when a Red Bank Regional base runner, coming home from third base after a Red Bank batter missed a suicide squeeze bunt, “came in with a shoulder block on the Rumson-Fair Haven catcher and was called out and ejected. The catcher retaliated by fighting.”
During the fight, a Rumson-Fair Haven Regional parent came on the field and allegedly assaulted a Red Bank Regional player, Little Silver Police Lt. Robert Frank told the Asbury Park Press on Saturday afternoon. Patrick Maisto, 49, of Rumson was arrested and was charged with simple assault, Frank said.
Maisto, through his attorney Mitchell Ansell of Ansell Grimm & Aaron of Ocean Township, said Monday he will plead not guilty to the charges.
