Rutgers Prep tops Wardlaw in Prep B semis


Kim Thomas and Kendra Barat both netted career highs of 22 points each in leading the second-seeded Rutgers Prep girls basketball team to a 76-55 victory over third-seeded Wardlaw-Hartridge in the Prep B semifinals on Friday afternoon in Somerset.

The Argonauts (11-6) will be seeking their third straight and 11th overall Prep B title on Wednesday against the winner of Sunday’s Neward Academy-Pennington game.

Taylor Gerhart led the Rams (12-11) with 17 points while Vanessa Santana and Camille Menns added 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Dunellen 47, South River 22: Freshman guard Jackie VonItter scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Destroyers (15-6) while sophomores Rachel Herbig and Alyssa Buccino each netted nine. Alyssa Barry netted a team-high 12 points for South River (11-12).

Old Bridge 56, Carteret 26: Kaitlin Johnsen scored 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead Old Bridge (5-16). Teammate Taylor Torre added 15 points in the winning effort. Courtney Hansen led Carteret (4-21) with seven points.

J.P. Stevens 54, South Amboy 37: Molly Yelencsics led all scorers with 18 points to propel the Hawks (2-22). Nicole Burns netted 12 points for South Amboy (9-12).
