Salmen takes advantage of second chance, wins Class 4A girls championship

MONROE — A pair of free throws by junior guard Megan Brown with .6 seconds left led the Salmen Lady Spartans a 40-39 victory over St. Thomas More in the 2013 LHSAA Class 4A State Championship game.

Trailing 39-38 with 6.2 seconds remaining in regulation, Brown attempted a 3-pointer that was blocked, but a foul was called on Cougars guard Jodi Quinn that sent Brown to the free-throw line for three attempts.

After missing the first, Brown hit the next two to give the Spartans the 4A title, their first since winning back-to-back championships in 1996 and 1997.
The Spartans (29-5), who advanced to the semifinals after a loss to Vandebilt Catholic was overturned because of an ineligible player, were led by Kalani Brown’s 12 points and 17 rebounds, and Hayley Pichon scored 11 points.
Allison Derise scored 12 points and Jodi Quinn chipped in 10 for St. Thomas More (30-6).
