The 11th-ranked West Liberty boys soccer team is headed to the Class 1A state tournament after upsetting No. 4 Holy Trinity (15-3) 2-1 Saturday in Fort Madison.
The game was scoreless at halftime. With the game tied at one apiece and less than five minutes remaining, Ariel Lopez scored the game-winning goal for the Comets.
West Liberty (9-6-3) will play Thursday in Des Moines. Class 1A pairings were not yet released Saturday.
* MOUNT PLEASANT 1, SOLON 0: Solon’s boys soccer team’s season came to an end after a 1-0 loss to Mount Pleasant in the 2A Substate Final Saturday in Solon.
“It was a frustrating day,” Solon coach Jeremy McMurrin said. “We played extremely well and had tons of chances to score. We kept hitting the post and couldn’t find the back of the net.”
The game looked like it would be scoreless heading into halftime but Mount Pleasant’s Bo Vitale scored a goal in the 37th minute. It was the lone shot against No. 6 Solon for the entire game.
“Defensively we played great,” McMurrin said. “But we just didn’t put the ball in the net when we should have.”
Solon finishes the season 13-3-2.
* CEDAR RAPIDS XAVIER 5, CCA 0: The season is over for the Clear Creek Amana’s boys soccer team after a 5-0 loss to No. 2 Cedar Rapids Xavier in a 2A substate final Saturday in Cedar Rapids.
The Clippers finish the season ranked 11th with a 14-5 record.
