The Class 5A 10th-ranked City High volleyball team won four matches Saturday to take first place at their own tournament.
The Little Hawks beat Davis County 25-9, 23-25, 15-10, Grandview Park Baptist 25-13, 26-24, and Pella 25-21, 25-23 en route to the championship game against Ankeny Centennial. City edged the Jaguars 26-24, 25-21. Davis County took third place, Grandview Park Baptist came in fourth, and Pella finished fifth.
Michaela Nelson led the Little Hawks with 43 kills on the day while Rylee Price had 23 and Allison Fleming added 16 more. Sabrina Rogers had 30 digs and Ruth Grace had 90 assists and seven aces.
“It was a Jekyll and Hyde kind of day. For three matches it almost felt like we weren’t there emotionally, then all of a sudden we flipped the switch,” City coach Craig Pitcher said. “When we played Centennial, we were a totally different team. One that showed a lot of promise and grit and found a way to make plays at crucial times especially with younger kids on the court.”
City is 5-0.
* WEST: West High went 2-2 on Saturday at the Marshalltown Tournament, losing in the semifinals to Waverly-Shell Rock.
The Women of Troy beat Iowa Falls in straight sets 21-10, 21-10 as well as Ottumwa 21-7, 21-6. They then fell to Class 4A No. 4 Charles City 11-21, 17-21 and finally to Waverly-Shell Rock 17-25, 13-25.
Laney Whitehead led West (4-4) with 14 kills and 29 assists. Hannah Fairfield had 15 kills, Midi Miller had 23 digs, Toni Martin had 18 digs, and Liz Klemme had 18 assists.
West is 4-4.
* SOLON: The Class 4A second-ranked Spartans took first place at the Warrior Varsity Invitational on Saturday in Cedar Rapids.
Solon beat Dubuque Senior 21-11, 21-11, Cedar Rapids Washington 21-16, 21-19, Marion 21-16, 19-21, 15-11, and Cedar Rapids Jefferson 21-15, 21-12 in pool play. The Spartans met Cedar Rapids Xavier in the championship game, defeating the Saints in straight sets 25-14, 25-19.
Solon is 7-0.
* WEST LIBERTY: The Comets went 2-2 on Saturday at the Muscatine Tournament.
West Liberty beat DeWitt Central 21-19, 21-12 in the first match. Molly Kelly went 13-for-14 serving with two aces and also led the team with 15 digs. Hailey Daufeldt led the Comets with seven kills and Cassedi Simon had 16 assists.
In the second match, West Liberty beat Burlington 16-21, 21-19, 15-11. Maddie Simon served 9-for-9 with an ace. Cassedi Simon lead the team in kills (10) and assists (21) while Molly Kelly had 26 digs. The Comets dropped matches against Muscatine 11-21, 13-21 and Davenport Assumption 15-25, 10-25.
West Liberty is 7-3.
* IMS: Iowa Mennonite School won two and lost three Saturday at the Mount Vernon Tournament.
IMS beat Tipton 21-15 21-17 before losing straight set matches to Mount Vernon and Waterloo Columbus. In the consolation bracket, IMS beat Mid-Prairie 19-25, 25-22, 15-10 but fell to Waterloo Columbus again in the consolation championship 25-16, 25-16.
Olivia Yutzy led IMS with 33 kills and 47 digs on the day. Casey Perez paced IMS with 50 assists and Natalie Graber had eight blocks. Hannah Miller went 40-for-41 serving with two aces while Kristin Davis was 27-for-27 with an ace.
IMS is 4-5.
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
The West High boys cross country took first place at the Pella Invitational with 31 points, more than 30 points ahead of second-place Pella in the large schools division.
Senior Daniel Gardarsson was the top finisher for the Trojans and second in the large school division with a time of 16:28, just behind first-place Skylar Dejong of Oskaloosa at 16:21. West’s Akash Borde finished third overall with a time of 17:13.
The West JV boys cross country team also took first place at the meet with three Trojan runners, Adam Weis, Nathan Kabat and Ali Ali, finishing first, second and third, respectively.
