Scoopshot: Mind and Body

Scoopshot of the week

USA TODAY High School Sports, in conjunction with Scoopshot, launched a photography series in which anyone could see their work published here. Scoopshooters were asked to send entertaining, high school sport-related photos that addressed each week’s Scoopshot task and we featured the photos each week that we thought best completed the task. Click any photo to view all the submissions to this Scoopshot task.

This week’s task asked you to send us photos representing preparing the body and mind at high school

Our feature shot comes from Brett O’Brien in Santa Monica, CA. Brett captures his brother, Nicholas, training to add muscle and increase his chances of becoming a varsity football star. This is a great training shot that fits in well with USA TODAY High School Sports.

This scoopshot task concept of body and mind was suggested by Mike Heasley of Chartier’s Valley High School. Mike is an aspiring young photographer and videographer who sent a series of still life shots from around his school. We normally don’t feature shots too far removed from the sport realm, but these are some great still life shots that “feel like school”. I can get these kinds of photos in my stock photography libraries, but, the depth of field in Mike’s shots is really what helps them to be special.

Mike says his favorite sport is LaCrosse, which requires a strong mental focus, and Mike’s shots captured the intellectual and creative side of the task, so much so that I included three of his shots.
