Top newcomers: Ashley Toruno, sr.; Courtney Siemers, jr.; Nicoleen Santos, jr.

Outlook: A young and inexperienced team shows lots of potential, and Whitworth expects confidence to expand with each match.


Coach: Julie Hawkins (third season)

2012 results: 10-6; lost to West Lafayette 3-2 in sectional championship.

Returning letterwinners: Madison VanFossen, sr.; Lexington Eiler, jr.; Meghan Dinkel, jr.; Meghan Hawkins, jr.

Top newcomers: Rebecca Dinkel, so.; Cailyn Holm, jr.; Rachel Taylor, jr.

Outlook: All-conference selections VanFossen and Meghan Dinkel, along with Hoosier Crossroads Conference coach of the year Hawkins, hope to build off of last year’s fourth-place HCC finish.


Coach: Dawn Patterson (second season)

2012 results: lost to Harrison 5-0 in sectional semifinals.

Returning letterwinners: Abby Beeler, sr.; Kinnsey Pass, jr.; Jenna Leingang, sr.; Courtney Gregory, sr.; Lauren Burkhardt, sr.

Top newcomers: Shelby Wagner, jr.; Lindsey Burklow, jr.; Madison Mudrich, fr.; Brooklyn Beeler, fr.

Outlook: Competition for the top spots has been exciting for Patterson, who is looking forward to an athletic bunch that should grow as the season progresses.


Coach: Vinod Mahalingam (first season)

2012 results: 4-11; lost to West Lafayette 4-1 in sectional semifinals.

Returning letterwinners: Rachel Sale, sr.; Melissa Moore, sr.; Kaci Harbison, sr.; Grace Oppy, jr.; Sarah Walker, sr.; Katie Walker, jr.; Claudia Medrano, sr.

Top newcomers: Amy Wroblewski, jr.; Rachel Ritchie, jr.; Lydia Ausherman, jr.; Kierney Winkleman, jr.

Outlook: A new coach brings an optimistic approach. Mahalingam is aiming for a .500 season and hoping the Mavericks will be competitors in the sectional tournament.


Coach: Tim Wright (16th season)

2012 results: 11-8; defeated Harrison 3-2 to win the West Lafayette Sectional; defeated Logansport 3-2 in regional semifinals; lost to Carmel 5-0 in regional championship.

Returning letterwinners: Sasha Sokolchik, so.; Rachel Berry, sr.; Miriam Frank, sr.; Audrey Folta, jr.; Nikki Shiver, jr.

Top newcomers: Rachel Wiese, sr.; Devna Patel, sr.; Katie Sigurdson, sr.; Caroline Oates, jr.; Gloria Mao, so.; Renee Zha, so.; Mahera Hussain, so.

Outlook: A strong contingent returns and competition remains deep into the lineup for last year’s sectional champion. Sokolchik will assume the top spot in the lineup after playing predominantly at No. 2 singles as a freshman.

Around the area

A senior-dominated team will lead Benton Central. Megan Marheine went 9-2 at No. 3 singles last season and will move up to No. 2 behind Sabrina Burton. Sophie Marquie and Alissa Brouillette will team together at No. 1 doubles after pairing up at No. 2 last season.

Five letterwinners are back for Carroll and first-year coach Matt Jones. Senior Alexis Lees moves up from No. 2 singles to the top spot. Karlee Kitchel and Courtney Benefiel will team up at No. 2 doubles, while Alexia Miller and Bayleigh Filbrun also are jockeying for singles spots. After earning 11 varsity letters, senior Bridget Peden is playing tennis for the first time.

Defending sectional champion Fountain Central has senior Shelley Holt and junior Hannah Cox coming back for a team that graduated six of its top eight players. Katharyn Majors and Alli Fay will figure into the mix as the Mustangs strive for improvement with an inexperienced roster.

Senior twins Hannah and Madison Jenkins return after competing in singles last season for Frankfort. Juniors Mady Corrie and Hannah Calvert, both new to tennis a year ago, return with some experience and senior Perla Castillo will move up from the JV. Sophomore Taylor Dillingham joins the team and is vying for a varsity spot.

Twin Lakes brings back four returnees, including junior singles player Courtney Bowsman. The No. 1 doubles tandem of senior Brittany Connell and junior Chayse Lehocky were all-state honorable mention honorees a year ago. Leah Crabb also returns for the Indians.
