The Daniel High boys soccer team moved into fourth place in the Western AAA Region standings with a 1-0 win against Wahalla last week.
The top four teams in the region will earn playoff berths.
“We’ve had a good season,” Lions coach Phillip Boyer said. “Our seniors have done an excellent job leading the team. I trust them.
“Our captains, Daniel Jones and Mik Webber, have a lot of experience at the varsity level. They are very reliable on and off of the field. They know the standards we have for the team and they want to uphold those standards.”
Webber leads the team in goals. Webber and fellow seniors Chase Aaron and Dennis McGregory have spearheaded the Lions attack.
“Mik hasn’t met a defender that could take the ball away from him,” Boyer said. “Dennis is fast and provides us with a physical presence at the top of our attack. Chase is a flair player and does things that are unexpected that gets the defense off balance.”
Senior Paulino Arredondo has started almost every game this season. Boyer said that Nolan Smith and Phil Coury have exhibited great work ethics and provided leadership for Daniel’s underclassmen.
“Regardless of our opponent, we have had a chance in every game because of our solid base,” Boyer said.
Junior Abraham Arredondo leads Daniel in assists.
“Abraham gives us the ability to be creative on offense,” Boyer said.
Boyer has been impressed with freshman Kit Schleifer’s level of composure and solid play.
Boyer, a 2006 Daniel graduate, said that the region is the toughest in its recent history.
“We are in the toughest region in AAA,” Boyer said. “The top six teams can beat any other team on any given night. We just have to take care of things on our end.”
