When Sheboygan North senior Trevor Damkot lined up to race against his fellow local cross country runners during the fall season, it was a safe bet that he’d be the one leading the pack.
Damkot, the Sheboygan Press All-Area Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year, finished ahead of all local runners in races that featured them en route to having the fastest local time at the annual WIAA State Cross Country Meet.
Aside from finishing 43rd in 16 minutes, 44 seconds at State, Damkot was fourth at his Division 1 sectional in 16:13.
He also won the Sheboygan County Invitational. Damkot — whose father Randy won the county title for Sheboygan South 29 years ago as a senior — won in 16:56.
The first-place time was nearly 25 seconds faster than second-place finisher and Damkot’s teammate Shamus Zenk. Damkot’s finish helped North claim the invite’s team title for the fourth straight year.
For his efforts in Fox River Classic Conference meets, Damkot was awarded an All-FRCC First Team selection. One of his highlights in FRCC competition came when he finished second at the October FRCC Meet in 16:07.
Earlier in the same month, Damkot finished second at the Fond du Lac Memorial Invite in 16:16 — one of the fastest times for a North runner in the past 10 years, until his time’s got faster throughout the season.
