Shore holds off late surge

The No. 4-seed Shore Regional boys basketball team withstood a late double-overtime surge by No. 5 seed Piscataway Tech in a 41-40 Central Group I quarterfinal victory on Thursday night.

With Shore (20-6) leading, 41-38, Piscataway Tech’s Jordan Lackey made a layup with 11 seconds left and got fouled. Lackey missed the ensuing free throw and Shore’s Kevin Bloodgood eventually got the ball and was fouled with nine seconds left.

Bloodgood went to the line for a 1-and-1. He missed the front end and Piscataway Tech got the ball and drove the length of the court. But the ball got poked away and time expired while there was a scramble for it.

Shore’s Dan Pillari finished with a team-high 13 points and Bloodgood and Ben Hess each finished with nine points. Shore is 5-0 this season in games decided by three or fewer points and 1-1 in overtime games.

Shore will play at No. 1-seed Point Beach in a semifinal at 3 p.m. Saturday.
