Hayden Harkins’ 20 points led Lithia Newsome to a 66-60 win over short-handed Dunbar on Friday in the 2013 East Lee County Holiday Madness tournament at East Lee County High School.
The Tigers (6-3), missing several players for various reasons, dressed only seven, yet overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to tie the game at 60 on Joe Williams’ two free throws with 41 seconds remaining.
Brandon Stewart’s layup with 23 seconds left broke the tie to give the Wolves (9-3) a 62-60 lead. Dunbar’s next trip down the floor resulted in a foul, but Kendrick Paulk missed the front end of a one-and-one. Harkins claimed the rebound with nine seconds left, and sealed the game at the free throw line.
“We had the game won, but we didn’t play smart at the end and took some bad shots,” said Dunbar coach Andre McGill.
“I’m proud of the way we fought though, and we’ll learn from this.”
Keonu Peniston led the Tigers with 26 points, while Paulk added 15.
Abu-Khadier leads Lightning to win
Abed Abu-Khadier scored 17 points, and four other players reached double figures in the Lightning’s 81-55 win over Hardee.
The Lightning (11-3) jumped out to a 14-2 lead in the first period, and the overmatched Wildcats, dressing only eight players, never got closer. Lehigh led by as much as 35 in the second half, pressing Hardee and constantly forcing turnovers with swarming defense.
“We’ve taken a little more pride in defense this year,” said Lehigh coach Dawn McNew.
“We’re a big, strong, athletic team. Everyone contributed in their own way. It was a total team effort.”
Esteve Metayer scored a game high 31-points for Hardee (1-10), including six 3-pointers.
Jaguars knock off Shamrocks
Host East Lee County used a big second half run to pull away from Donahue Catholic, winning 87-51.
Gerard Tarin scored 29, and Winfred Ward scored 21 for the Jaguars (9-4), while Daniel Scanlan led the Shamrocks (2-5) with 23 points.
Turnovers present problems for Gators
Riviera Beach Suncoast was opportunistic in its 61-26 win over Island Coast.
Turnovers doomed the Gators (4-8), as free possessions allowed the Chargers (11-1) to stretch a 9-7 lead after one period to as much as 37 points in the fourth.
Channing Gaspard led the Chargers with 16 in the win, while Brandon Green led the Gators with eight.
