Talk about a short bench.
With just seven skaters available, Elmira rode Peter Lagonegro’s three goals and Steven Navone’s clutch goaltending to a 5-3 victory over Corning for the Twin Tiers High School Hockey League championship Thursday at First Arena.
Elmira outshot Corning 24-19, but Navone made some tough stops on open shots and breakaways late in the game to keep the Express in front. Corning had a power play over the final minute and 8 seconds.
“Steven played on his head,” said Kyle Tomkalski, who with Sean Roberts coaches the Elmira squad.
Logan Baldwin and Austin Roberts scored a goal apiece for the Express.
Kyle McCarty had two of Corning’s goals, with the other one coming from Alec Kerbein.
“It’s hard to play with just seven guys,” Tomkalski said, adding that three of his players were competing in junior league sectional games Thursday.
Tomkalski, a freshman at Elmira College, played for last year’s Express team that lost to Corning.
This season the Express took three of the four meetings with the Hawks.
