Shortridge honors ex star Herschell Turner

Shortridge High School is retiring the jersey of former basketball star Herschell Turner Friday night.

Turner, 75, will be honored between the junior varsity and varsity games.

After excelling at Shortridge in the 1950s, the 6-2, 195-pound guard became a Helms All-American at Nebraska, then played for several ABA teams in the 1960s.

In addition to his basketball exploits, which earned him a spot in the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, he also became an accomplished artist, whose works included subjects ranging from U.S. presidents to Tiger Woods.

Turner is expected to attend the ceremony.
