Simonetti sparks Braves to MCT upset win over Purple Roses


Matt Simonetti pitched a complete-game three-hitter and visiting Manalapan, the No. 13 seed, scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth inning and defeated No. 4 seed St. Rose, 1-0, in a Monmouth County Tournament round of 16 game. Simonetti (2-1) struck out seven and walked one.

James Halasy singled in the sixth, went to second on a passed ball and scored on a throwing error on a ground ball to third for Manalapan (11-8).

Brad Currao was the hard-luck loser for St. Rose (13-2), pitching a complete-game six-hitter. He struck out six and walked three.

MIDD. SOUTH 4, COLTS NECK 0: Senior right-hander Rob Grill pitched a three-hitter to record his second shutout of the season and Frank Servidio had a two-run triple in a three-run fifth as the No. 8 Eagles (9-6) beat the No. 9 Cougars (8-8) in a MCT round of 16 game.

JACKSON LIB. 8, PT. BORO 6: The Lions (13-5, 11-2) scored four runs in the top of the sixth on four errors and one hit and rallied for a win over the Panthers (9-8, 7-6) to clinch the outright Class B South title.

MANCHESTER 5, DONOVAN 4: Ed White homered to lead off the fifth to give the Hawks (9-7, 8-5) a 5-3 lead and pitched a complete-game seven-hitter in a Class B South win over the Griffins (14-5, 8-5).

SJ VIANNEY 1, MANASQUAN 0: Rich Hoffman (four innings) and Justin Chin (three innings) combined to scatter eight hits, and Andrew Lewnes singled with two outs in the top of the fourth and scored on an error on Joe Rotelli’s single to left as the Lancers (12-4, 9-4) beat the Warriors (3-12, 3-10) in Class A Central.

TR SOUTH 3, BRICK MEM. 2: Clayton Kapp’s line drive homer on to the roof in right center with two out in the bottom of the eighth gave the Indians (13-5, 9-4) a Class A South win over the Mustangs (8-10, 6-7).

MATER DEI 3, HENRY HUDSON 2: Tom Delehanty’s single to right with two out in the bottom of the seventh scored Ryan Branagan with the winning run as the Seraphs (10-6, 10-3) defeated the Admirals (6-8, 5-8) in Class B Central.

MONMOUTH 5, OCEAN 4: Jeff Farrah’s RBI single with two out in the top of the fifth gave the Falcons (10-6) a 5-1 lead, Brian Quinn went 4-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI, and Tom Broyles went 2-for-3 with an RBI and picked up his second save in as many games with a hitless seventh for a nondivisional win over the Spartans (10-8).

TR EAST 12, LACEY 2: Anthony DeBlasio earned the win and had a three-run double in a five-run fifth that broke the game open as the Raiders (9-7, 7-6) beat the Lions (2-15, 0-13) in Class A South for career win No. 499 for head coach Bill Frank.

JACKSON MEM. 8, SOUTHERN 2: Kyle Johnson went 2-for-3 with three RBI and Matt Thaiss belted a solo homer in the third and had two RBI and Spencer Young went 2-for-4 with an RBI as the Jaguars (16-1, 13-0) continued their unbeaten run through Class A South with a win over the Rams (3-12, 2-11).

TR NORTH 10, BRICK 3: Ron Marinaccio went 2-for-3 with four RBI and the Mariners (12-5, 8-5) scored seven runs in the first inning in a Class A South win over defeated the Green Dragons (10-7, 7-6) in Class A South.

FREEHOLD 8, MARLBORO 3: Senior left-hander Michael Bolton (4-1) pitched a complete-game four-hitter, and Zach Mulhern had a two-run single in the fourth and Steve Rullo each hit two-run singles a two-run single in the fifth as the Colonials (11-6) beat the Mustangs (9-7) in a nondivisional game.

BARNEGAT 11, CENTRAL 0: Freshman Jason Groome struck out 12 and was one out from a no-hitter before Marcus Drumright singled with two outs in the sixth as the Bengals (6-10, 5-8) defeated the Golden Eagles (7-8, 7-6) in a Class B South game.
