Singleton leads TR North to win


With the game tied with three seconds left, Toms River North senior guard Damien Singleton went to the line.

He made the first free throw. He missed the second free throw and then the ball got tipped away from the scramble. Eastern was barely able to get off a desperation halfcourt shot that fell way short at the buzzer.

Singleton’s free throw lifted the No. 4 seed Mariners to a 57-56 victory over No. 5 seed Eastern in an NJSIAA South Jersey Group IV quarterfinal round game. Toms River North will play at No. 1 seed Atlantic City on Friday.

Singleton finished with 12 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Mariners (25-3). Senior forward Solly Stansbury added a team-high 16 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks and junior guard Kyle Carrington added 11 points and seven rebounds.


LAKEWOOD 69, POINT BORO 36: Tyrice Beverette scored 13 points and Mo Diawara, Jared Craddox and Ben Watson tallied 12 each, leading the top-seeded Piners (24-2) past the No. 8 Panthers (15-7) in the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group II bracket.

Craddox scored six and Malik Mendez, Beverette and Diawara chipped in four points each, keying a 20-6 second-quarter assault that rallied Lakewood from an 11-6 first-quarter deficit. Ryan Thrunk scored four of his six in the first eight minutes.

Lakewood went on a 23-9 third-quarter spree, taking a 49-26 lead as Diawara scored eight, Beverette had six and Watson put home four. Eric Davis scored five and Haseem McGrady scored four in a 22-10 fourth-quarter Lakewood output.

MANASQUAN 47, LONG BRANCH 42: Manasquan senior guard JR Hobbie had a big fourth quarter as the No. 2 seed Warriors outlasted No. 7 seed Long Branch in Central Group II game.

Hobbie scored seven of his 15 points in the fourth quarter when he hit a 3-pointer and went 4-for-4 from the foul line. Senior forward Jimmy Walsh added 13 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks and junior guard Tommy Toole scored a 15 points on a season-high five 3-pointers and finished with five assists.

ATLANTIC CITY 61, SOUTHERN 56: Junior forward Mike Gesicki had 24 points, seven rebounds and five blocks for the eighth-seeded Rams (16-9) as they fell to the top-seeded Vikings in South Group IV game.


RUTGERS PREP 53, ST. ROSE 43: The seventh-seeded Purple Roses’ season ended at 18-7 with a loss to the No. 10 Argonauts in Non-Public South B game.

Jimmy Rockstedt led St. Rose with 12 points, including four in the fourth quarter. Brendan Lynch added 11.
