Smith's double lifts Lincoln past Leon

The Lincoln Trojans beat the rival Leon Lions Tuesday night 3-2 on a walk-off double by Logan Smith in the bottom of the seventh inning.

In a showdown where hits were hard to come by for both teams, Smith swung the bat well.

Smith went 3 for 4 with a pair of singles and the winning double to bring across two of Lincoln’s three runs.

“Logan came up big for us tonight,” Lincoln coach Joe Vallese said.

“There weren’t many hits in this game and I think he had a few. Derrick (Gerald) did a really nice job for us on the mound tonight, too. You can’t ask much more from a guy that throws a complete game like that.”

Derrick Gerald went all seven innings for the Trojans striking out eight batters and only allowing one hit.

Vallese says Gerald does a great job of hitting his spots and keeping the other team off balance with hi off-speed pitches, and clearly Gerald did just that.

Willis McDaniel also had a crucial sac-bunt RBI in the bottom of the fifth to help tie the game.

Leon’s Will Smith threw five innings, recording four strikeouts and not allowing a hit until the fourth.

The visiting Lions struggled to find hits, scoring two unearned runs, but they played gritty baseball.

Kyle Brasher went 1 for 2 with a double.

“We just played a really good team tonight in Lincoln,” Leon coach Robbie Zimmerman said.

“Will pitched great for us tonight. He’s our guy and we knew we could count on him to have that type of game tonight. It was just a tough, hot game, and unfortunately we didn’t come away with the win tonight.”
