Smyrna, La Vergne to meet tonight

North Rutherford pride is on the line at 7 tonight.

Smyrna travels to La Vergne’s Freedom Field for the 27th meeting of the North Rutherford rivals.

But the game is crucial for both programs, as the winner could start a string of wins with a victory tonight.

La Vergne, which finished 2-8 in 2012, hosts Wilson Central, plays at first-year school Stewarts Creek and then hosts Ravenwood over the next three weeks. Smyrna, which finished 1-9 in 2012, hosts Cane Ridge, plays at Antioch and hosts Clarksville Northeast after tonight’s game.

“Our schedule is different than others because we do have a long stretch of non-district games,” Smyrna coach Matt Williams said. “We’ve got three in a row. We hope we can get on a roll by the time we get back in our district schedule.”

Smyrna is 25-1 all-time in the series. The Bulldogs defeated La Vergne 7-6 for its lone win last season. Both teams have shown improvement in the offseason. But La Vergne must make adjustments after falling to Siegel 42-14 in last week’s Rutherford County Jamboree.

“I think we are very eager to show we’ve improved from last year,” Williams said. “But I think they’re eager to show they are better than they showed against Riverdale in last week’s jamboree. Offensively, we didn’t show anything that we had been doing.”
