Franklin used five second-half goals to beat Hendersonville 6-0 on Saturday and earn its first trip to the boys state soccer tournament since 2002.
Franklin (15-0-2) used a smothering defense to create a quick, devastating offensive attack.
“This was one of the best games our boys have played all season,” Franklin coach Mike Burgoyne said. “Defensively, even the midfield and attacking, we kind of got frustrated in the first half a little bit, but they were patient, they kept fighting, kept shooting, and kept going.”
Alister Berger started the scoring with 3:01 left in the first half on a pass from Jimmy Wester.
Franklin’s Conner Quiggle missed a penalty kick with 46.1 seconds left in the half.
“We felt fortunate to only be down 1-0 at half,” said Hendersonville coach Russ Plummer, whose team finished 17-5-1. “We thought we’d make some adjustments at half and try to give it a game, but it wasn’t that way, bottom line.”
Matt Brady scored with 38:16 left, and Drew Collins added another four minutes later on an assist from Brady.
“It’s just our drive to win,” Brady said. “We obviously haven’t lost and we just want to keep that going.”
Wester, Ryan Finnerty and Tony Beckman added the other three goals.
