Cori McFall belted a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth, helping the eighth-seeded Arlington High School softball team to a 10-5 Section 1 Class AA first-round victory over ninth seed Suffern in Freedom Plains on Tuesday.
“She hit it about 250 feet. It was instant off the bat, you knew it was gone,” Arlington coach Dave Ballantyne said of the home run that gave his team a 10-5 lead.
McFall finished with two hits, three runs scored and four RBI. Marissa Sforza contributed two doubles, two runs scored and two RBI. Jordan Ballantyne had two singles.
Winning pitcher Jessica Newberry, who struck out three, slugged a two-run homer in the first inning to give the Admirals a 2-0 lead.
“She was battling the elements and kept us in the game. They were pesky and came back against us,” Dave Ballantyne said.
Arlington will play the winner of today’s first-round game between top seed Roy C. Ketcham and 16th seed North Rockland on Thursday. The Admirals lost to Ketcham, 3-2 and 5-0, during the regular season. Arlington and North Rockland did not meet during the regular season.
“It’s a nice confidence boost (to get the first-round win),” Ballantyne said. “We struggled down the stretch after a good start. I hope the girls will go into the next round with confidence and play well.”
