The Marlboro High School softball team reached the state Final Four for the first time since 2009 after defeating Babylon 8-3 in a Class B state regional final at St. Joseph’s College in Suffolk County on Wednesday.
The Section 9-champion Iron Dukes (22-1) will play Section 2’s Chatham on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the Queensbury Sports Complex. The winner will advance to the state final at 4:30 p.m. against the winner of the semifinal between Section 4’s Windsor and Section 5’s Wayland-Cohocton.
“Our goal was to win our section and everything now is a bonus,” Marlboro coach Jennifer Veronesi said as her team was returning from its trip. “We’re grateful we’ve gotten this far and we’ll take it one game at a time from here. We’ll do the best we can and enjoy the opportunity we’ve earned.”
Marlboro took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on winning pitcher Aubrey Bianco’s two-run double and Nina Wimberly’s RBI single.
After Babylon answered with three runs in its half of the first, the Iron Dukes scored the eventual winning run in the second on Ashley Votta’s RBI single.
Marlboro added three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth. In the fourth, Wimberly singled home a run and Cassie LaPointe singled in two.
Bianco finished 3 for 4 with the double and three RBI. LaPointe contributed three hits and two RBI. Amber Mianti doubled and tripled. Andrea Schoonmaker doubled.
“We were hitting the ball hard with runners in scoring position,” Veronesi said.
“We faced a strong team. They had good 3-4-5 hitters and their pitcher had good movement on her pitchers. Knowing we had 16 hits against a good team gives us confidence (for Saturday).”
