Softball: Toms River North rallies in 9th for win


After giving up a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning to go down 4-2, fourth-seeded Toms River North scored three in the bottom half of the inning to win a dramatic 5-4 contest over fifth-seeded Vineland in the NJISAA South Jersey Group IV tournament.

With one out, Sam Salomon singled to center and went to second on a groundout off the bat of Kelly Cuthbert. Chrissy Ribaudo and Sam Reilly then earned back-to-back walks to jam the bases for Riley Vuyovich, who also walked to bring in Salomon and cut the deficit to a run. Brielle Perrotta then reached on an infield single to score Ribaudo with the tying run, and Reilly came in with the game-winner when winning pitcher Ashley Hussey singled as well.

North (18-7) scored its first two runs on an error in the first, but the Fighting Clan rebounded in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs to tie the game. Reilly finished 2-for-3 while Hussey allowed four hits and four walks and struck out three for the victory.


RARITAN 7, SPOTSWOOD 1: Danielle Marino went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Nicole Coppolino went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, Lindsey Carver had a hit and two runs scored, and Emily Schaffer scattered six hits with six strikeouts and four walks as the Rockets advanced in Central Group II.

In the fifth, Raritan (20-8) scored twice when Carver walked and went to second on a fielder’s choice, then scored on a double by Coppolino, who then scored on a single to left by Marino for the eventual game-winner.

OCEAN 10, NORTHERN BURLINGTON 3: Winning pitcher Gianna Kinhofer slugged a three-run homer and a solo blast while going 3-for-3 with five RBI, and Jenna Ambrosio went 2-for-4 with two RBI as the Spartans (19-5) moved on in Central Group III. Kinhofer also struck out two and walked four while throwing a four-hitter.

SHAWNEE 3, TR EAST 2 (10 inn.): After the Renegades scored twice on an error in the top of the sixth to tie the South Group IV contest, then scored in the 10th to grab the lead, the Raiders (21-4) got their opportunity to tie in the bottom of the 10th via the international tiebreaker but came up short. Lauren Coppinger singled up the middle with two outs, but East’s runner was tossed out at the plate to end the game.

With two outs in the fourth, Val Hirschfeld walked and Alyssa Cenci, running for the catcher, stole second and scored on Jordan Weed’s single to left. With Jenna Platten on second running for Weed, Sam Lanzano then singled to right-center to bring in the Raiders’ second run. Weed struck out 17 and allowed three hits.

EASTERN 3, TR SOUTH 2 (9 inn.): The Indians (15-12) scored twice in the top of the seventh to send the game into extra innings, but the Vikings scored in the bottom of the ninth to grab the South Group IV victory.

Down 2-0 in the seventh, Harley Gowdy singled and Nancy Condoluci reached on an error before Kiaya Jacobs walked to load the bases for Gabby Loffredo, who singled to center to bring in South’s first run and Patricia Gantner walked to bring in the tying run. South had five hits, the others coming from Sam Vogel, Taylor Leuck and Condoluci.

Danielle Gabriel fanned 11, including the 300th of her senior season, and walked one.
