THE WINNER: Justin McKie


School: Irmo (Columbia, S.C.)
Grade: Senior
Position: Guard
Height: 6-foot-4
Weight: 180 pounds

Athletic achievement: He led the Yellow Jackets to a 29-0 record and the Class 4A state championship this past season. McKie averaged 18 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.8 steals per game while shooting 80 percent from the free throw line. South Carolina’s 2013 Mr. Basketball, he scored 20 points with 10 rebounds in a 65-46 win over Goose Creek (Berkeley, S.C.) in the Class 4A state final.   

Academic excellence: McKie has maintained a B average.

Exemplary character: He has volunteered locally on behalf of the Special Olympics, as part of an elementary school literacy-outreach initiative and as a summer basketball camp counselor.


“Justin McKie has a competitive edge and a fire that you don’t see every day,” said Thomas Ryan, head coach at Dorman (Roebuck, S.C.). “He’s one of those kids who’s actually fun to coach against because he always plays the game the right way.”

THE FUTURE: McKie has signed with South Carolina.
