Southern Regional senior Samantha Burns won the South Jersey Group IV long jump at 17-1.5, and the Rams’ 4×800 relay team took first place in 9:32.18 to highlight local action at the NJSIAA Sectional Championships at Egg Harbor Township High School on Friday.
Southern was third overall after Day 1 in girls SJ IV with 38 points. Egg Harbor was first with 61 points followed by Cherokee in second with 45.
In the long jump, Burns bested Toms River North junior Tifani Byrd, who took second at 16-8.5.
In the 4×800, the Rams finished first in 9:32.18 behind Jenna Ritchie, Courtney Muraczewski, Abby Harris and Melana Hammel.
Southern’s boys team also won the SJ IV 4×800 as Dan Geoffroy, Mike Evans, Nick Nocco and Cody Raynor finished first in 8:08.49. The Rams were fourth after Day 1 with 22 points. Egg Harbor was first with 36.
Toms River East’s Gilligan Greenlow took second in the SJ IV discus at 154-9. Egg Harbor’s James Plummer threw 185-6 to take first place. Toms River North’s Kevin Benson was third at 150-9.
