Spanberger's two-out grand slam lifts Granite City past O'Fallon

Chad Spanberger has hit five home runs this season for Granite City, Ill., but none were as big as the one he hit Wednesday. With his team trailing O'Fallon 5-3 in the top of the seventh in a 4A regional semifinal, Spanberger hit a two-out grand slam to lift his team to a 7-5 victory.

Spanberger, a junior who has said he will sign with Arkansas, is a three-year starter. He played shortstop and third base on Wednesday but has also pitched and played catcher this season.

“All season long, bases loaded, I haven’t gotten a hit — I haven’t come through,” Spanberger told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “But the biggest part of the game, biggest part of the season, too, I came through. It’s exciting.”

Granite City coach John Moad said much has been expected of Spanberger this season.

"The expectations of him are so high because he's such a good player," Moad said. "If anyone else had this kind of season, it would be great. He's not come through in a few spots before, but I'd rather him him come through in a spot like that. It happened so fast, I was speechless. What a moment."
