Springer leads Highland over Louisa-Muscatine with 2-hitter


The 12th-ranked Highland softball team blanked Louisa-Muscatine 11-0 in five innings Tuesday in Riverside.

Katie Springer earned the win, allowing two hits and striking out nine. Paige Wieland went 2-for-3 with three runs. Bridget Murphy and Bailey Walsh each hit 2-for-2 with doubles. Murphy had three RBIs, while Walsh had one. Kassie Vazquez went 2-for-2 with a home run and an RBI while Cheyann Adamson was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI.

“Great hitting tonight,” High coach Carrie Wieland said. “Everyone took their time in the box and picked good pitches.”

Highland is 14-2 overall and 8-0 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference.

* DURANT 6, WEST LIBERTY 4: Despite a close game early on, second-ranked Durant proved to be too much for the Comets to handle in West Liberty.

Durant was up 4-3 after the second inning and scored two more in the fifth to take 6-3 lead. A seventh-inning rally fell short for West Liberty. Each team recorded 10 hits and West Liberty had two errors.

Kayla Kaalberg went 4-for-4 and had two runs. Merideth Nichols and Haley Simon had two hits and one run apiece. Shelby Martin gave up three earned runs and struck out five in the loss.

West Liberty is 9-7.

* NORTH CEDAR 4, WEST BRANCH 1: Allie Russell hit 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI to lead the Bears in a loss at Stanwood.

West Branch is 8-8 overall and 3-3 in the Cedar Valley Conference.

* MEDIAPOLIS 4, IMS 1: It was tight game before a two-run home run in the fifth-inning helped to lift the Bullettes to a 4-1 win over Iowa Mennonite School in Mediapolis.

Statia Majerick had two hits and two singles for IMS while Casey Perez recorded a hit and a run. Laura Hochstetler struck out seven in the loss.

IMS (4-6) will host WACO on Thursday.

* PEKIN 8, LONE TREE 2: The Lions fell to the Panthers in Lone Tree.

Cheyenne Evangelista and Makenzie Reynolds each had RBIs for the Lions. Madelyn Flemr had two hits, while Morgyn Edwards doubled. Avery Edwards took the loss, striking out four.

Lone Tree is 4-8 overall and 4-4 in the SEISC.
