Squeeze bunt delivers regional softball crown to Carroll


FLORA – Courtney Atkisson’s suicide squeeze bunt scored Carly Kingery with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday night, lifting Carroll to a 2-1 Class 2A regional softball victory over Lewis Cass.

Kingery was dominating on the mound for Carroll (17-6), pitching a no-hitter into the seventh inning. She struck out 14 and allowed no walks.

Paige Spesard broke open a pitcher’s duel between Kingery and Lewis Cass’ Charlie Nolen, homering in the sixth inning. But Megan Carden countered with a home run in the seventh, the only hit Kingery allowed.

Kingery singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh, moved to second on Maizie Wickersham’s bunt single and took third on a passed ball. One out later, Atkisson laid down the bunt that delivered a second consecutive regional title to Carroll.

The Cougars take on Wheeler at the LaVille Semistate on Saturday.


Twin Lakes Regional

MONTICELLO – Chloe McAchren went 2-for-3 and pitched a three-hitter but Twin Lakes fell 2-1 to South Bend St. Joseph’s in a Class 3A regional.

Kaylee LaOrange scored the lone run for the Indians, who finish 21-8.


Delphi Sectional

DELPHI – Codey Sattler led a five-run seventh inning with a grand slam, his second in the last three games, to give Class 2A No. 6 Delphi an 8-4 come-from-behind victory over Seeger in the rain-delayed first semifinal.

Ostin Clark added a pair of hits, including a solo home run, and Brent Hawn (2-1) pitched four scoreless innings in relief, striking out five.

Steven Schall had two hits, including a double and an RBI to lead No. 9 Seeger.

The 24-hour delay stunted a fast start by Seeger (20-8), which led 4-1 when rain forced the game’s suspension in the fourth inning.

Delphi grabbed a 1-0, second-inning lead when right fielder Garrett Bean lined a run-scoring double to center with one out, but Seeger seized a 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the second against Oracle starter Jason Sterrett.

Alexander Mull drove in a run with a groundout, and then Jordan Stover lined an RBI single to center. The Patriots extended their advantage to 4-1 in the bottom of the third on consecutive run-scoring singles from John Acton and Steven Schall.

The Oracles (21-6) will play Carroll for the sectional championship tonight after the Cougars downed Sheridan 5-2.

Ryan Spesard had a pair of hits, including a double and an RBI, and Jared Miller allowed only five hits in a complete game victory.

Brady Wiles added two hits, and Cameron Crume had a solo home run for the Cougars.

Austin Hoover had two hits, including a double and an RBI, to lead the Blackhawks.

WOLCOTT – Caleb Hendress singled home pinch runner Clint Hendress with the game’s only run in the sixth inning of this Class A sectional final.

Cole Frybort led off the sixth with a walk and was replaced by Clint Hendress. Drake Fleck sacrificed Hendress to second. Following a strikeout, Caleb Hendress collected one of the five hits off Riley Benner.

DJ Buschman pitched a three-hitter and struck out six. Kolten Linback went 2-for-2 with a double and a walk for the Vikings (24-4).

Benner struck out five.

At N. Montgomery

Norht Putnam 7

LINDEN – The Athenians (23-10) pounced on an error to start the sixth inning, following the miscue with six conseuctive hits to break a 6-6 tie and capture this Class 3A sectional title for the eighth consecutive year.

Jake Zurawski reached on the infield error and Crawfordsville loaded the bases on bunt singles by Jordan Jackson and Logan Meadows. A single by Dane Baldwin broke the tie and Chandler Pursell followed with a two-run single. Shad Conrad doubled home pinch runner Sam Page to make it 10-6.

The third infield single of the inning, Justus’ grounder to shortstop, brought in pinch runner Tyler Reeves. Conrad later scored on a ground out by Cam Monroe.

Jackson reached base three times and scored all three times. Pursell drove in four runs and earned the victory by allowing two earned runs and six hits over 613 innings.
