St. Mary’s celebrates mascot with their own version of the Harlem Shake
Embracing the opportunity to win USA TODAY High School Sports’ title of the nation’s best high school mascot, students and faculty at St. Mary’s Episcopal School (Memphis, Tenn.) have been celebrating their unique turkey mascot. The end result? Two amazing Harlem Shake — or Turkey Shake — videos.
Bhavya Jha, editor of the student newspaper the Tatler, and assistant editor, Lacey Chaum, organized the student version, which they shot prior to a lacrosse game.
Coincidence had it that there was an all-school faculty and staff meeting going on at the same time. The girls decided to head over to the meeting on a whim to hopefully shoot a faculty version. The head of the school, Albert Throckmorton, was all for it, as was the entire faculty and staff.
The Turkeys took the state round and now are competing in a Southeast regional round, with a shot at becoming one of six schools to move into the finals.
