ATLANTA – The winter sports season at St. Pius X is in full swing with both basketball teams playing three games last week, while wrestling hit the mats twice and swimming and diving took to the pool. The boys’ team sits in the No. 4 spot in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution AAA poll, while the girls’ team continues to sit in the top spot in the polls.
The boys’ basketball team opened Region 6-AAA play with a 46-42 loss to Cedar Grove. Nick Harris scored 14 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in the loss. Harris scored 14 and hauled in 12 boards in a 45-34 win over Towers to even the region record. Mak Krause and Will Horton had eight points each in the win. Stepping out of region play on Saturday, the Golden Lions (6-1, 1-1) defeated Riverwood behind 23 points from Harris and 10 points from Will Maguire. St. Pius X will host Cross Keys Tuesday and Decatur Friday with both games tipping at 7:30pm.
The lady cagers swept all three games last week. The Golden Lions (5-2, 2-0) were led by Asia Durr’s 22 points in a 55-14 win over Cedar Grove. Gabby Burns chipped in 10 in the victory. Miah Allen and Adriana Daves poured in 10 points each in a win over Towers on Friday. After trailing 24-19 at the half to Riverwood, St. Pius X opened the second half on a 16-0 run to take a 65-34 win. Durr led all scorers with 35 points. The Golden Lions host Cross Keys on Tuesday and Decatur on Friday before taking a break for exams. Both games tip at 6pm.
Swimming and Diving finished second to Alpharetta and ahead of Greater Atlanta Christian last week in a three team meet. The girls’ team took the top spot in its competition, while the boys’ team finished second. The Golden Lions will travel to GAC this week in a head-to-head match-up Thursday.
Wrestling competed in the Woodstock Wolverine Classic last weekend and had three wrestlers place in their respective weight classes. Dalton Scoggins finished second, while Nick Twiner placed fifth and Connor Laubenthal sixth. The grapplers head to Marist for a dual meet with the War Eagles and Blessed Trinity on Wednesday before travelling to Rockmart for a tournament on Saturday.
