St. Rose (6-0, 6-0) used a four-run second inning to jump out in front and would tack on four more in an 8-3 win over the Garnet Gulls (4-2, 4-2) to take a commanding division lead in Class B Central.
In the fifth inning St. Rose’s Joey Delacruz added to the Purple Roses’ 5-1 lead when the senior third baseman drilled a two-run double as part of his 2-for-3 performance at the plate.
The purple Roses’ lead-off man, Brendan Lynch, would further extend his team’s advantage to 8-3 with his second base hit of the game, a two-out RBI single in the the bottom of the sixth inning.
St. Rose’s Brad Currao picked up his first win of the season, as the Wagner College-bound southpaw struck out eight batters and allowed two earned runs over 99 pitches and six innings of work.
Point Beach’s Paul Fiorentino was on base three times, going 1-for-1 at the plate with two walks, a run scored, and an RBI single that scored Zach Yates in the second inning. Alan Nieto’s infield single single plateed Fiorentino in the fifth inning, and the Garnet Gulls’ offense was capped off in the top of the sixth when Nick Fiore came around to score on a Danny Pfefferkorn sacrifice fly after his leadoff double and steal of third base.
MATAWAN 9, OCEAN 4: Matawan’s Shawn Johnson went 3-for-4 at the plate, including a triple and an RBI, while teammates Dan Incle and Justin Harnett each collected two hits and scored two runs, as the Huskies (5-2, 5-1) ran past the Spartans (4-4, 3-3) in this Class B North game. Johnson also picked up the win on the mound striking out two over 5 2/3 innings before Robert Marshall picked up his fourth save.
RUMSON-FH 9, SHORE 3: Rumson’s Morgan Maguire went 3-for-4 at the plate, clubbing a pair of doubles and driving in two runs, before improving his record on the mound to 1-1 by striking out four batters and allowing two runs over five innings of work. Maguire’s efforts helped lead the Bulldogs (4-4, 4-3) over the Blue Devils (1-6, 1-5) in this Class A Central meeting.
Rumson received a two-run homer from Joey Spernal, while Shore’s James Kelly belted a home run of his own.
MARLBORO 6, FREEHOLD TWP. 2: Marlboro’s Evan Hilla was a duel threat on Wednesday relinquishing only two hits and striking out seven batters to improve his season record to 1-1, while recording a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored, leading the Mustangs (5-3, 4-3) over the Patriots (3-6, 2-5) in this Class A North clash.
COLTS NECK 7, MIDD. NORTH 0: Colts Neck’s Casey Wall scattered three hits, walked two, and struck seven in his complete game effort as the Cougars (5-3, 4-3) upended the Lions (3-4, 3-4) in the Class A North matchup.
The Cougars’ Gianni Magliaro delivered a solo home run in the fourth inning as part of his 2-for-3 showing that included two runs scored and a pair of RBI.
