Staffordsmith leads Jackson Liberty to victory


Mackenzie Staffordsmith scored five goals and had three assists as the Jackson Liberty girls lacrosse team defeated Manchester, 15-13, in a Class B South game on Friday.

The Lions (6-6, 6-6) won the previous matchup against the Hawks (6-8, 3-7) 11-6 earlier in the season.

After leading 7-6 at halftime, the Lions outscored the Hawks 8-7 in the second half to hold on for the win and get back to the .500 mark.

Carina Legotte, Haley Smith, Alex Havens and Nicole Mickendrow each scored two goals each. Bri Marrone, Smith, Havens and Mickendrow all had two assists.

Manchester’s Kelly Serpi scored five of her game-high nine goals in the first half. Serpi scored her 87th goal of the season, and currently ranks at the top of the Shore Conference with 102 points. Goalie Viona Richardson made 17 saves in the net.

BARNEGAT 13, DONOVAN 9: Nicole Federovitch scored five of her game-high six goals in the first half to lead the Bengals (9-5, 6-4) past the Griffins (2-9, 2-6) in a Class B South game.

Senior Sarah Smith scored four goals and Meagan Collins scored two goals for the Griffins.

HOWELL 11, FREEHOLD TWP. 6: Melena Fontaine scored three goals to lead the Rebels (7-5, 5-4) past the Patriots (8-4, 7-3) in a Class A North game. Chynna Chan and Jordan Chan each scored two goals and had one assist.

Freehold Township’s Nicole Torres scored two goals and had one assist. Carli Dixon finished with one goal and one assist.


SHORE 9, RB CATHOLIC 8: Jesse Phalanukorn scored the game-winning goal with five minutes left as the Blue Devils (9-3, 4-1) defeated the Caseys (3-10, 2-4) in a Class A Central game. Phalanukorn finished with three goals and Jack Kelly had four goals. Red Bank Catholic’s Chris Whitlock had two goals and two assists.

TR EAST 12, TR SOUTH 9: Nolan Gottshall had four goals and two assists, Nick Stafford had three goals and one assist and Pete Cagno had two goals and three assists as the Raiders (5-8, 3-6) defeated the Indians (2-8, 2-5) in a Class A South game. Toms River South’s Robert Hailey had seven goals.


TR SOUTH 2, MANCHESTER 0: Joe Esposito’s 23 assists and three blocks led the host Indians (13-3) past the Hawks (6-7) in non-divisional action.

Trevor Signorino added seven kills for the Indians. Brian Sutera contributed six kills. Josh Swindell and Alek Purpuro added three kills and two blocks each.

For Manchester, Doug DeSimone finished with seven kills, three blocks and four digs. Blake Borsetti had seven kills, three blocks and seven digs. Ali Yildrim contributed 12 digs. Sean Rembach and Nick Capasso notched seven assists and nine feeds, respectively.
