Beckman of Dyersville pitcher Adam Noethe planned to continue his baseball career in college. A Division I football opportunity threw him a changeup in June.
Noethe, who will play in today’s Class 2-A state championship against North Polk of Alleman, decided to join the football team at Tulsa.
He had planned to play football and baseball at Wartburg when he was aggressively sought out by the Golden Hurricanes, who were in need of a strong-legged placekicker.
“Kicking opened up a new opportunity,” Noethe said.
Noethe earned Des Moines Sunday Register second-team all-state honors last fall. He’s also an all-state soccer player.
His longest field goal in a game was 44 yards.
However, he booted a 59-yarder during halftime warmups of a playoff game at the UNI-Dome. Noethe kept kicking, taking a few steps back, and sending another football through the uprights.
“We just kept going back and back,” Noethe said. “All of the fans were applauding. I couldn’t say no.”
Noethe made sure Tulsa saw the display on his highlight video he sent to the college.
“They were really impressed by that,” Noethe said.
