State tournament roundup: Seventh-seeded Tigers topple Cavs

RAPID CITY – While most teams hope to get off to a fast start, Mobridge-Pollock took the idea to another level on Thursday, jumping out to a double-digit lead over No. 2 Aberdeen Roncalli in the opening minutes and cruising to a 67-52 win at the Class A state boys basketball tournament.

The seventh-seeded Tigers (19-5) led 13-2 midway through the first quarter before pushing their advantage to 20 points with 6:21 left in the half.

“We’ve had a tendency where we play in spurts, kind of up and down,” said MP coach Tim Frederick. “We had to make sure we could come out and get some easy baskets and then it’s all about sustaining. We really have a belief that in the fourth quarter, it’s our game.”

Although Roncalli (16-5) cut the deficit to 40-30 with under five minutes to play in the third quarter, the Cavs were unable to pull within single digits, thanks in part to Mitchel Heumiller, who caught fire for the Tigers to the tune of 26 points on 10 of 12 shooting.

“I told him, ‘You’re doing the little things right and the ball will start dropping, but the only way you’re going to find out is if you shoot’ – and of course he shot,” said Frederick. “Not only was he shooting the ball well from the perimeter, but he also took it strong to the basket.”

Heumiller also had six assists while Daniel Roberts added 12 points, Dockter 10 and Pearson Wientjes 12 rebounds. Dominic King and Kendal Deutsch each had 15 points to lead Roncalli.

RAPID CITY – After watching three of the top four seeds fall in the opening round of the Class A state boys basketball tournament, No. 3 Madison made sure they didn’t continue the trend Thursday night with a 60-34 rout of No. 6 Pine Ridge.

The Bulldogs (21-2), the highest remaining seed in the tourney, shot 51 percent in the first half en route to a 46-16 lead at the break as Rush Milne came off the bench to sink his first five shots for 10 points. Tyler Wiebe scored a game-high 15 points while Jesse Brown, who grabbed 10 rebounds in the first half, finished 10 points and 12 boards to help Madison advance to tonight’s semifinals against Mobridge-Pollock.

“It was an interesting game because we’ve been to several state tournaments over the years and this is the first time we’ve played the last game of the first session, and it’s not fun, especially when you watch these top seeds get knocked off,” said Madison coach Mike Ricker. “You start to wonder, ‘Are we going to come out flat? Are we going to face a team that’s shooting lights out?’ We needed a good start and we got it.”

Jeff LeBaeux had 16 points on 8 of 11 shooting for Pine Ridge (14-8).
