BIG JUMP: Jake Hanks was feeling pretty good Thursday about his chances to repeat as a state champion in the Class 5A boys shot put after placing fifth in the discus with a throw of 147 feet, 9 inches.
Hanks, a Fort Collins High School senior, was seeded 17th in the 18-man field entering the meet with a season-best of 141-8. Rocky Mountain sophomore Max McDonald was sixth at 145-7, and Fossil Ridge senior Colin Peter eighth at 144-1.
PACING POUDRE: Poudre teammates Paul Miller and Grant Fischer finished third and fifth, respectively, in the 5A boys 3,200-meter run. Miller’s time was 9:42.60, and Fischer’s was 9:43.91.
Rampart’s Tucker Hamilton was the winner in 9:29.70.
Miller and Fischer were joined by Preston Roche and Zach Hooker on the Impala’s sixth-place 3,200 relay team.
LAMBKINS 3RD IN RELAY: Fort Collins’ girls 3,200 relay team of Jill Remmers, Abbey Ervin, Maddie Staab and Devynn Miller finished third in a season-best 9:15.14.
WILLIAMS HURTING: Fossil Ridge senior Rhianna Williams, the defending 5A state champion in the 400, was slowed by shin and quadriceps injuries and finished fourth in her qualifying heat and with the seventh-fastest preliminary time overall. She made the nine-runner final but pulled out of the 200 prelims later in the day.
Williams also runs the anchor leg on the SaberCats’ 800 sprint medley relay, which advanced with the seventh-fastest time, and 1,600 relay. Prelims in the 1,600 relay are Friday.
RELAY RECORDS: Fort Collins girls set school records in the 5A 800 sprint medley and 800 relays.
The sprint medley team of Maddi Bollig, Alka Rennat, Jordyn Siemens and Becca Schulte took the last spot in the final with the ninth-fastest prelim time of 1:48.49, while the 800 relay team of Schulte, Siemens, Allie Suppes and Josephine Petruska had the third-fastest prelim time of 1:40.58.
CLEARING HURDLES: Poudre’s Spencer Long, Fort Collins’ Ryan Rogers and Fossil Ridge’s Ethan Leonard all advanced to the final of the 5A boys 110 hurdles, while Rocky Mountain’s Carly Lester and Poudre’s Carly Paul made the final of the 5A girls 100 hurdles.
JUMPERS PLACE: Fort Collins’ Langston Stuckey was seventh in the 5A boys long jump at 21-3 3/4, and Fossil Ridge’s Tyler Russell finished eighth in the 5A boys high jump at 6-3.
FORCATTO ADVANCES: Liberty Common’s Nico Forcatto won his preliminary heats in the 2A boys 100 and 200. His 22.59 clocking was the second-fastest prelim time in the 200, and his 11.43 100 was the fifth-fastest.
WALLACE 8TH: Heritage Christian’s Anika Wallace finished eighth in the 1A girls 3,200 in 13:53.76.
